In a significant development for the automotive industry, Hyundai Motor Europe (HME) has announced a leadership transition that is set to reshape its strategic direction and growth trajectory. Effective January 1, 2025, Xavier Martinet will take over as President and CEO, succeeding Michael Cole, who will step down from his role on December 31, 2024, after a commendable 15-year tenure with Hyundai Motor Group.
A New Leader with Extensive Experience
Xavier Martinet arrives at HME with a wealth of knowledge and over 27 years of experience in the automotive sector. His career began at Renault in 1997, where he honed his skills in various roles, including Sales Manager and Managing Director of Renault Italia. Most recently, he served as Senior Vice President for Commercial Services and Marketing Sales & Operations at Dacia, demonstrating a proven track record in enhancing brand presence and driving customer satisfaction across diverse markets in Europe and the United States.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Martinet stated, “I am excited to join Hyundai Motor, an automotive industry leader in technology and innovation. I am honored to have the opportunity to lead the great teams at Hyundai Motor Europe and will strive to further enhance sustainable growth, delivering exceptional customer satisfaction with the support of our dealers and importer partners.”
A Legacy of Growth and Innovation
Michael Cole has been at the helm of HME since July 2020, following a distinguished career with Kia in various senior leadership roles. Under his guidance, Hyundai has significantly strengthened its presence in the European market, transitioning from a traditional car manufacturer to a comprehensive mobility solutions provider. His leadership has been instrumental in navigating the challenges posed by a rapidly evolving automotive landscape and increasing competition.
Reflecting on his departure, Cole remarked, “After more than 40 years in the automotive industry, it is now time to return to the UK to be with my family and to enjoy life beyond work. I have been incredibly fortunate to enjoy a career in such a dynamic industry and to have worked at Hyundai Motor Group, the best and most progressive automotive organization in the world. I am proud to have worked with a great team in Europe, who I know will ensure that Hyundai continues its exciting growth trajectory.”
Acknowledging Cole’s Contributions
Jose Munoz, President and Global Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor Company, praised Cole’s contributions, stating, “Michael Cole has made major contributions during his 15 years at Hyundai Motor Group. We are all grateful to Michael for his outstanding leadership, driving Hyundai’s growth across Europe.” Munoz’s comments underscore the positive impact Cole has had on the organization, setting a robust foundation for Martinet to build upon.
Looking Ahead
As Martinet prepares to step into his new role, he faces the challenge of maintaining Hyundai’s momentum in Europe amidst shifting consumer preferences and technological advancements. With a focus on sustainability and innovation, the incoming CEO aims to enhance the company’s offerings and strengthen partnerships with dealers and importers.
The leadership change at Hyundai Motor Europe marks a pivotal moment for the organization, blending the legacy of Cole’s accomplishments with Martinet’s fresh perspective and extensive experience. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Hyundai is poised to lead the charge into a future defined by innovation and customer-centric solutions. The transition signifies not only a change in leadership but also a renewed commitment to driving growth and enhancing the customer experience in the European market.
