Rüsselsheim am Main, Germany – November 6, 2025 – Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) today marked a major milestone in its European strategy with the opening of Square Campus, a €150 million expansion at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center (HMETC) in Rüsselsheim am Main, Germany. This state-of-the-art facility underscores the Group’s commitment to innovation, engineering excellence, and the development of market-leading technologies tailored for European customers.

A Landmark Investment in European Innovation

The new 25,000m² Square Campus represents HMETC’s most significant investment since the launch of Round Campus in 2003. Designed to accelerate the development of future Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles, the facility combines cutting-edge testing capabilities with a collaborative workspace that connects European engineers more closely with Hyundai Motor Group’s global R&D hub in Namyang, South Korea.

Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director at HMETC, highlighted the strategic importance of the expansion:

“The investment at Square Campus is a clear sign of our commitment to the region and reflects the importance of Europe in our long-term growth strategy. The extensive new capabilities at HMETC give us more independence and flexibility, while creating exciting opportunities for collaboration between our brands. Fundamentally, Square Campus will support us as we continue to grow our market share in Europe, developing new vehicles and technologies designed around the needs of our customers.”

Unlocking Advanced Capabilities

Square Campus equips HMETC with some of the world’s most advanced testing and development facilities. Its semi-anechoic chamber, the largest within Hyundai Motor Group, enables unrestricted Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) testing and drive-by noise analysis under controlled conditions, independent of the weather.

The facility also features:

  • Highly advanced dyno testing setups, supporting electric, hybrid, and internal combustion powertrains.
  • A state-of-the-art EV charging laboratory for next-generation electrification solutions.
  • A high-fidelity driving simulator for immersive vehicle development.
  • Extended Electronics System Development labs, enabling Over-the-Air updates, cybersecurity testing, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) validation.

These capabilities allow HMETC to test and validate vehicles in real-world conditions while ensuring that future models meet the specific expectations of European drivers. Square Campus complements global knowledge-sharing programs and outdoor prototype testing, offering a controlled environment that accelerates development timelines.

Sustainability and Collaboration at the Core

The expansion reflects Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to sustainable mobility. Square Campus incorporates recycled materials, photovoltaic panels, and heat pump systems, reinforcing the Group’s goal of achieving zero-tailpipe emissions globally by 2045.

The facility also supports the growth of HMETC’s team, which has expanded by 20% since 2024 and now employs over 500 professionals. By bringing together experts across disciplines, Square Campus fosters integrated innovation to advance connected, sustainable mobility in Europe.

European development at HMETC will continue at the Nürburgring facility, which underwent a €13 million expansion earlier this year. This investment added 834m² of dedicated testing space, workshops, and specialized laboratories, further strengthening Hyundai Motor Group’s capacity to deliver world-class vehicles for the European market.

A Future-Ready Hub for Mobility Excellence

With Square Campus, Hyundai Motor Group demonstrates its long-term commitment to Europe, combining cutting-edge technology, sustainable design, and collaborative innovation. The facility is not just a development center; it is a statement of intent — that Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis will continue to deliver vehicles engineered with European drivers in mind, today and in the decades to come.
