Kia UK has surged to new heights in 2026, posting its strongest-ever monthly and quarterly sales performance since entering the market 35 years ago. The brand registered 20,136 vehicles in March alone, securing a 5.3% market share and a third-place finish overall, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
This momentum carried through the first quarter, where Kia recorded a total of 35,851 car and van registrations, placing it third in the combined UK market year-to-date. Passenger vehicles accounted for the lion’s share, with 34,616 units, elevating Kia to the position of the second best-selling car brand with a 5.6% market share.
At the heart of this success is the enduring appeal of the Kia Sportage. The model continues to dominate the brand’s portfolio and remains one of the UK’s most popular vehicles, ranking as the third best-selling car overall with 14,190 units registered year-to-date, including 7,310 in March alone. Its consistent performance underscores its broad market appeal and importance to Kia’s growth strategy.
Electrification has also played a defining role in Kia’s record-breaking start to the year. The Kia EV3 has emerged as a standout performer, becoming one of the most sought-after electric vehicles in the UK. It ranks fourth in retail EV sales year-to-date and eighth overall, with 3,628 units registered. March proved particularly significant, with fully electric vehicles accounting for 29% of Kia’s car registrations, positioning the brand third for the month and fourth year-to-date in EV adoption.
Meanwhile, the Kia Picanto continues to demonstrate its staying power in the compact segment. With 3,818 units registered by the end of March, it stands as the second best-selling city car in both monthly and year-to-date rankings, reinforcing its reputation as a dependable and accessible urban mobility solution.
Kia’s expansion into the commercial vehicle sector has also delivered immediate results. The introduction of the Kia PV5, the brand’s first dedicated fully electric van under its Platform Beyond Vehicles strategy, has made a notable impact. Since its launch at the start of the year, the PV5 has recorded 1,235 registrations, quickly establishing itself as a leading contender in the zero-emission light commercial vehicle segment. This performance has propelled Kia into third place in the eLCV market, despite offering just two initial variants.
The broader commercial vehicle market has also responded positively, with Kia securing 11th place overall across all powertrains. As additional PV5 variants are introduced throughout 2026, the brand is expected to strengthen its foothold in this competitive space.
Kia’s early-year performance reflects a strong foundation built in January and February, during which it consistently ranked as the UK’s second best-selling car brand. The Sportage led the charge as the top-selling vehicle in January and maintained a near-top position in February, while the Picanto topped the city car segment at the start of the year.
With a growing electric vehicle portfolio that currently spans six models and will soon expand with the arrival of the Kia EV2, Kia is reinforcing its position as a leader in electrification. Additional models, including the Kia Seltos and further PV5 derivatives, are set to broaden its offering and sustain its upward trajectory.
Reflecting on the milestone, Paul Philpott, President and CEO of Kia UK, highlighted the significance of the achievement, noting that the brand’s record-breaking results demonstrate the strength of its product line-up and the continued trust of its customers. As Kia builds on this momentum, it is well positioned to further solidify its standing as one of the UK’s leading automotive brands in an increasingly electrified market.
