Kia and Motability Operations Ltd. unveil an electric wheelchair accessible vehicle (eWAV) designed to transform lives and redefine the future of inclusive transportation.
At the prestigious Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit in London, Kia Corporation unveiled its latest breakthrough in inclusive transportation: the PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle). Developed in collaboration with UK-based Motability Operations Ltd., the model showcases the powerful potential of Kia’s Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) technology, tailored to meet the real-world needs of people with disabilities.
This debut marks a significant step in Kia’s evolution from an automaker into a comprehensive Sustainable Mobility Solutions Provider. And with the PV5 WAV, Kia isn’t just building a vehicle—it’s building a future where freedom of movement is truly accessible to all.
“The PV5 WAV is more than just a vehicle; it’s a gateway to independence and freedom for those with mobility challenges,” said Sangdae Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of PBV Division at Kia.
Engineering with Empathy: How Kia’s PV5 WAV Redefines Accessible Mobility
At the core of the PV5 WAV’s design is a deep understanding of the challenges faced by wheelchair users, caregivers, and families. Built from the ground up as an electric vehicle, the PV5 WAV maximises the flexibility of EV architecture to deliver intelligent, user-centric solutions:
- Side-entry access from the curb ensures safe and dignified boarding directly from the sidewalk—no need to navigate hazardous traffic-side doors.
- A 300kg-rated quick-deploy wheelchair ramp simplifies entry and exit, while a purpose-built belt fastening system offers added security.
- A third-row tip-up seat allows caregivers to provide side assistance, underscoring the vehicle’s commitment to inclusive design for the full spectrum of user needs.
- AAOS-based digital features aim to integrate accessibility-centric apps and tools for a more connected mobility experience.
All manufacturing will take place at Kia’s Hwaseong EVO Plant in Korea—a facility engineered with sustainable processes to align with the brand’s carbon-conscious ethos.

Meeting a Global Need with Smart, Electric Solutions
The launch of the PV5 WAV comes at a pivotal time. As internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles—long the base platform for WAV conversions—face global phase-out mandates, electric WAVs are urgently needed to fill the gap. With life expectancy rising and demand for accessible transport increasing, Kia’s electric-first approach ensures the longevity and scalability of its inclusive mobility strategy.
This is not Kia’s first foray into disability-inclusive mobility. Since 2012, the brand has pioneered various initiatives such as South Korea’s Green Trip project and a universal mobility research pilot in Los Angeles, which provided ride-hailing services to people with specialised needs.
Powered by Partnership: Kia and Motability Operations
A key catalyst for the PV5 WAV’s UK debut is Kia’s strategic partnership with Motability Operations Ltd., the organisation behind the UK’s Motability Scheme—the largest vehicle leasing service for people with disabilities in the country.
This collaboration combines Kia’s innovation with Motability’s deep understanding of the needs of disabled drivers and passengers. Together, they are bringing an affordable, functional, and future-proof eWAV to market—one that supports everything from daily commutes to essential healthcare and social connectivity.
Global Horizons for Inclusive Mobility
While the PV5 WAV was revealed in London, Kia’s ambitions are global. Building on its PBV vision first articulated during Kia EV Day 2025, the company is actively exploring opportunities to roll out the WAV model in additional regions. The aim is to empower individuals worldwide with vehicles that not only meet accessibility standards but exceed them in quality, usability, and environmental impact.
A Future of Mobility That Leaves No One Behind
The PV5 WAV is more than a display of innovation—it’s a clear articulation of Kia’s future. A future where mobility is human-centred, sustainable, and accessible to everyone.
As the global automotive industry races toward electrification and autonomy, Kia is ensuring that inclusivity travels the same path—at full speed.
