Kia has written a powerful new chapter in commercial mobility with its first fully electric van, the PV5. In its inaugural year on the market, the PV5 has claimed the most prestigious recognition in the light commercial vehicle sector: the 2026 International Van of the Year (IVOTY) award. For Kia—and for Korea’s automotive industry—this victory marks a milestone moment, underscoring a bold step into a fast-evolving segment where electrification, innovation, and real-world relevance are reshaping customer expectations.
Presented on 19 November at the IVOTY Award Gala during SOLUTRANS 2025 in Lyon, France, the accolade comes after voting by a jury of leading commercial vehicle journalists representing 26 countries. Their decision signals a resounding endorsement: Kia is no longer simply a player in the LCV market—it is a force redefining it.
A Benchmark-Setter From Day One
The PV5’s triumph comes as no surprise to Jarlath Sweeney, Chairman of the International Van of the Year jury, who praised the van’s category-defining approach. According to Sweeney, the all-electric PV5 “sets a new benchmark for innovation, efficiency, and all-round capability,” pairing zero-emission performance with tangible business-ready practicality. In short, the PV5 is not just another electric van—it is a vision of what tomorrow’s LCV should be.
Anchoring this achievement is Kia’s holistic approach to modern commercial mobility. Designed from the ground up as a Purpose-Built Vehicle (PBV), the PV5 blends efficiency with adaptability, ensuring businesses have more than just a greener alternative—they have a smarter one. Its modularity, refined aesthetic, and driver-focused functionality mark a significant leap forward in Kia’s mission to deliver electric mobility for businesses at scale.
Kia’s Vision, Validated
For Kia Corporation President & CEO Ho Sung Song, the award is more than industry recognition—it is affirmation of a journey years in the making. He emphasizes that the PV5 was developed by “listening closely to business customers” and engineered to embody the brand’s design identity while meeting the demands of real-world operation. The model also debuts an innovative manufacturing approach that integrates traditional conveyor systems with cell-based production for greater flexibility and environmental efficiency.
To have the PV5 named International Van of the Year in its first year, Song notes, is “an exceptional honor” and proof that Kia’s PBV division is poised to reshape the LCV landscape.
This sentiment is echoed by Marc Hedrich, President & CEO of Kia Europe, who highlights that the recognition arrives just as the first PV5 units reach European markets. For a newcomer to the LCV category, this kind of reception is rare—and it signals that Kia’s engineering, practicality, and design philosophy are resonating with the experts who know the segment best.

Performance That Goes Beyond the Podium
Awards may recognise excellence, but it’s in real-world conditions where credibility is truly earned—and the PV5 has already proven its mettle. Built on Kia’s Electric-Global Modular Platform for Service (E-GMP.S), the PV5 Cargo (L2H1) delivers an all-electric driving range of up to 258 miles, while the Passenger variant offers 256 miles, both measured on the WLTP cycle. Rapid DC charging—10% to 80% in under 30 minutes—ensures minimal downtime, while a payload capacity of up to 790 kg underscores its utility.
Yet one achievement stands out above all: the PV5 Cargo (L2H1) now holds a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title, having travelled 693.38 kilometres (430.85 miles) on a single charge while carrying maximum payload. For fleet operators seeking proof of endurance, efficiency, and operational reliability, few demonstrations could be more compelling.
A PBV Built for the Future
The PV5 represents the first tangible outcome of Kia’s purpose-built vehicle strategy, launched in 2022. Developed by the brand’s PBV division under the leadership of Executive Vice President Sangdae Kim, the van blends practicality with transformative thinking. Kim notes that the PV5 is the result of “actively listening to customer voices,” ensuring that every design, packaging, and functional choice aligns with genuine business needs.
This customer-led approach is key to Kia’s PBV strategy: create vehicles that adapt to businesses—not the other way around.
And the PV5 is only the beginning. With the Cargo (L2H1) and Passenger variants now available across Europe, the range will expand in 2026 with the introduction of a Chassis Cab, a short-wheelbase Cargo (L1H1), and a High Roof (L2H2). Larger PBV models, including the PV7 and PV9, are already in development, promising even greater versatility for a broader spectrum of industries.
A New Era for Electric Commercial Mobility
By winning the 2026 International Van of the Year award, Kia’s PV5 has accomplished something remarkable: it has entered the market not as a challenger, but as a leader. It brings together the qualities that modern businesses demand—zero-emission performance, functional design, long-range capability, and measurable dependability—wrapped in a future-forward vision of electrified mobility.
For Kia, it is a defining victory. For the LCV sector, it marks a new benchmark. And for business customers, the PV5 represents an invitation to rethink what a commercial vehicle can achieve in a rapidly electrifying world.
The PV5 may be Kia’s first fully electric van—but its debut has already reshaped the road ahead.
