The 2025 South African Rotax MAX Challenge (SARMC) shifts gears this weekend as the championship heads to KwaZulu-Natal for Round 3—marking a pivotal point in the national karting calendar. For the first time this season, the revered iDube Raceway plays host to South Africa’s best Rotax talent, rejoining the circuit rotation after a year-long absence. Nestled in the rolling hills outside Pietermaritzburg, iDube’s technical, undulating layout promises to test every driver’s skill, precision, and courage as the penultimate round of the season gets underway.
Leading the charge into KZN is the Toyota Gazoo Racing Junior Academy (TGRJA), a team on a mission and riding high on momentum. With multiple class podiums already under their belt, the academy’s young stars are set to solidify their championship standings—and, for some, punch their ticket to the prestigious Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals in Bahrain.
DD2 – Coetzee on the Brink of Glory
In the DD2 class, all eyes are on Jason Coetzee. The Cape Town native has been nearly untouchable this season, clinching five of six heat victories across Rounds 1 and 2. After a dominant sweep in Vereeniging, Coetzee holds a commanding lead in the standings.
Yet iDube’s tight corners, dramatic elevation changes, and the high-speed descent into the famed ‘Thunderdome’ offer no room for complacency. Coetzee’s combination of mechanical finesse and calm under pressure will be essential as he aims to wrap up the title early and earn his place on the global stage in Bahrain.
Senior MAX – Swartz Surging, Lenaerts Resilient
In Senior MAX, Kent Swartz has emerged as a serious contender after a composed and calculated showing in Vereeniging. With a heat win and overall podium now behind him, Swartz arrives in KwaZulu-Natal brimming with confidence. A maiden national round victory could be within grasp—especially at a circuit that rewards smoothness and rhythm.
On the other side of the paddock, Georgia Lenaerts is on a redemption arc. Her campaign has been punctuated by misfortune, but her stunning comeback in Heat 3 at Vereeniging reminded everyone of her raw pace and tenacity. With a clean run, iDube could serve as the breakthrough performance she’s been chasing.

Junior MAX – Dowling Commands, Shisinwana Climbs
Emma-Rose Dowling returns to iDube not only as a Round 1 winner but also as one of the most consistent drivers in the Junior MAX category. Fresh off international competition, Dowling brings a blend of poise and racecraft that has made her the benchmark for 2025. If she delivers another strong weekend, she may very well put the title out of reach.
Meanwhile, Tshepang Shisinwana is finding his rhythm in Junior MAX after graduating from his Mini MAX championship-winning campaign. His late charge to a podium finish in Vereeniging signalled his growing confidence in the class. With iDube’s narrow track demanding smart overtakes and patience, Shisinwana’s developing racecraft will be critical.
Mini MAX – Kaiyamo Twins Take Strides
From Namibia, Nande and Mandume Kaiyamo are making steady inroads into the fiercely competitive Mini MAX field. Nande’s top-10 finish in Vereeniging was a milestone, reflecting the twins’ rapid adaptation to national-level racing. iDube’s technical layout will reward their growing precision and consistency, two attributes the pair have clearly been honing.
All Eyes on iDube: A Track That Demands Respect
Beyond its scenic setting, iDube Raceway is a motorsport crucible. From the blind crest at ‘Pipeline’ to the double-apex right-hander that coils like a snake before plunging into the ‘Thunderdome,’ the track punishes mistakes and rewards mastery. With every heat potentially determining Grand Final berths, the stakes have never been higher.
“TGRJA has shown tremendous growth across the season,” says team principal Leeroy Poulter. “iDube is a drivers’ track. It’ll reward those who have put in the work. We’re confident that our drivers are ready for the challenge.”
Weekend Format: The Road to Champions
The race weekend kicks off on Friday and Saturday with extensive practice sessions, giving competitors a crucial window to dial in their setups. Saturday afternoon’s qualifying will set the tone for Sunday’s triple-heat showdown, where consistency and composure will define champions.
As the national title fight intensifies and the Rotax Grand Finals draw nearer, iDube is more than a venue—it’s a crucible where potential becomes proven talent. With every corner holding the promise of glory or heartbreak, Round 3 of the SARMC promises to be nothing short of spectacular.
