In a significant step toward a sustainable future, HORSE, a division of Horse Powertrain, has announced that its ambitious greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets have been officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This validation marks a pivotal moment for the company, underscoring its commitment to leading the automotive industry towards a decarbonised future.
Aiming for Net-Zero by 2050
As part of its sustainability strategy, HORSE has committed to achieving net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. This means that by mid-century, the company aims to eliminate or offset all of its carbon emissions generated throughout its operations, including production, supply chain, and product use.
However, this lofty goal is not without short-term objectives. HORSE has set a series of measurable targets for 2030 to ensure that it remains on track toward its long-term vision. Key among these is the reduction of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions—those generated directly by HORSE’s operations and from purchased electricity—by 42%. To further bolster its green credentials, HORSE has pledged to increase its renewable electricity sourcing from 71% to 100% by the same year.
Additionally, the company is addressing Scope 3 emissions, which account for the indirect GHG emissions from the use of its sold products. HORSE aims to reduce these emissions by 25% by 2030. The inclusion of Scope 3 emissions in its targets reflects the company’s recognition of the broader impact its products have throughout their life cycle, from production to end-of-life disposal.
Pathways to Achieving Sustainability Goals
Achieving these ambitious targets will require a multi-faceted approach. HORSE plans to implement a range of strategies, including the expansion of low-carbon engine sales, with a goal of ensuring that 60% of its total engine sales are low-carbon by 2030. Additionally, the company will transition to 100% renewable electricity across its operations, further reducing its carbon footprint. Biomethane will be used in production plants to further decarbonise its energy consumption.
The company’s broader sustainability plan, known as the ESG Plan 2030, also focuses on energy efficiency measures and operational improvements. Through innovation, increased efficiency, and the adoption of cleaner energy sources, HORSE is positioning itself as a leader in decarbonising the automotive industry.

A Vision for Industry Transformation
Patrice Haettel, CEO of HORSE, expressed the company’s determination to make a meaningful impact on the environment and the industry at large. “Achieving this approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) demonstrates just how seriously we are taking the sustainability of our business and our planet,” he stated. “We are committed to giving more back than we take and it’s why we will continue with our mission to develop and deliver innovative power solutions that support a decarbonised future. These targets are a clear demonstration of our drive to create meaningful change within the automotive industry.”
Haettel’s remarks highlight HORSE’s vision not just as a manufacturer of powertrain solutions, but as a transformative force in the global transition to cleaner, more sustainable mobility.
The Role of the SBTi in Corporate Sustainability
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a globally recognised body that helps companies set emissions reduction targets aligned with the latest climate science. By validating HORSE’s targets, the SBTi has confirmed that the company’s goals are in line with the level of decarbonisation needed to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
These targets are considered “science-based” because they reflect the latest climate science and represent the levels of GHG reduction necessary to prevent catastrophic global warming. For companies like HORSE, aligning business growth with these rigorous standards not only enhances corporate reputation but also future-proofs their operations against the evolving regulatory and market pressures around sustainability.
A Bright Future for Sustainable Mobility
HORSE’s SBTi-approved targets are a testament to the company’s dedication to driving the shift towards a more sustainable automotive industry. By focusing on reducing emissions, increasing the use of renewable energy, and prioritising energy efficiency, HORSE is setting a standard for other players in the industry to follow.
The road to a net-zero future is long, but with clear, actionable steps and a focus on innovative solutions, HORSE is positioning itself as a key player in the decarbonisation of the automotive sector. As the industry faces growing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, HORSE’s leadership offers a hopeful glimpse into a future where sustainability and performance go hand in hand.
