Kariega, 25 May 2022 – Young guns and rookie racers are out to take over in the Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup, if the first two rounds of the season are anything to go by.

The old school is ready to stand its ground though, when Round 3 goes down at the VW Extreme Festival at Aldo Scribante in Gqeberha this coming Saturday, 28 May 2022.

So far this season, 16-year old Polo Cup champion Leyton Fourie came, saw and conquered as he’s already won his first race en route to moving into a small title advantage aboard his Express Hire Polo SupaCup. The consistent youngster leads double race winner, former GTC factory pilot Keagan Masters’ Perfect Circle machine and opening Cape Town round second race winner, Universal Racing’s Jeffrey Kruger at the sharp end of the SupaCup title chase.

Behind them, the Campos brothers Keegan, who sits fourth in the chase and Jason in seventh, will be looking for better luck in Gqeberha. They sit each side of Arnold Neveling, who enjoyed a dream debut to take overall honours in his first ever SupaCup outing at Zwartkops last time out, Jean-Pierre van der Walt’s Platinum Wheels Polo and Cape lad Danie van Niekerk’s Titan Stunts machine.

They will be joined by Danian and Nathan Hammond, both who’s Trinity Security Polos have now been repaired following their spectacular accident at Killarney’s opening round, while Calvin Dias takes back driving duties in the Carello Auto Polo SupaCup driven to great effect by Tato Carello at Zwartkops last time out. Local driver Nick Davidson will meanwhile be out to make it a hat trick of Masters wins in his Stu Davidson Polo, with papa Rui Campos and Andre Bezuidenhout out to stop him.

“The GTC SupaCup remains the domain of the quickest racing Volkswagen Polo GTIs and we at Volkswagen Motorsport are particularly proud that our car has become the SupaCup weapon of choice,” said Mike Rowe, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “It’s super-tight up front of this year’s series with a young Polo Cup champion fighting it out with two experienced contenders. Saturday’s SupaCup action is at our spiritual home and we cannot wait to entertain our loyal local fans,” added Rowe.

SupaCup is a spectacular racing class for the powerful 2-litre turbocharged front-wheel drive Polo GTI hatchbacks. The locally-developed and built Polo GTIs feature wings for extra downforce and wide, sticky slick tyres. Sharing the track with the Global Touring Cars, the SupaCups set off well behind to deliver fans two thrilling races in one. GTC and SupaCup will race as part of the bumper VW Extreme Festival races at Aldo Scribante on Saturday, 28 May 2022.

Volkswagen Motorsport thanks its partners CompCare Medical Scheme, Dunlop, Sonax, Motul and Volkswagen Genuine Parts.
