Surrey, UK, 7 May – British automotive engineering excellence has once again taken centre stage as Gordon Murray Group (GMG) receives the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise, a royal commendation recognising the pioneering innovation embodied by its acclaimed Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) T.50 supercar.
Celebrated globally for its uncompromising approach to design, engineering, and driving purity, the T.50 is the culmination of six decades of visionary automotive work by Professor Gordon Murray CBE. The King’s Award acknowledges the T.50’s world-leading innovation across multiple domains: from ultra-lightweight construction and advanced aerodynamics to unmatched packaging and an engine that redefines internal combustion performance.
Engineering Excellence Worthy of Royal Recognition
At the heart of the T.50’s accolade is a collection of sector-first achievements. Weighing just 997kg, the T.50 is officially the world’s lightest supercar, a full third lighter than typical models in its class. This remarkable figure was achieved through a fanatical commitment to weight-saving at every level — from materials and construction to component design.
However, the T.50 isn’t just light; it’s also extraordinarily practical. With its three-seat configuration — driver front and centre — and 288 litres of usable storage, it defies supercar conventions by offering genuine usability without compromising beauty or performance. Even more impressive, it delivers this practicality within the smallest footprint of any current supercar.
Powertrain and Aerodynamics: A New Gold Standard
The T.50 is propelled by the GMA V12 — a naturally aspirated 3.9-litre marvel developed in collaboration with Cosworth. This engine is the lightest of its kind ever built for a road car, capable of spinning to a 12,100 rpm redline and boasting an astonishing 28,400 revs per second throttle response. The result is a level of responsiveness and acoustic theatre rarely, if ever, experienced in modern motoring.
Aerodynamics, too, break new ground. The T.50’s defining feature is its patented 400mm rear-mounted fan, inspired by Murray’s 1978 Brabham BT46B Formula One “fan car.” This innovation generates the majority of aerodynamic force beneath the vehicle via ground effect, allowing the car to maintain clean, elegant bodywork free from wings or aggressive ducts. By actively managing airflow above and below the car, the fan balances downforce and drag seamlessly across the speed range.

A Vision Realised: Driving Perfection
All of these innovations serve a singular mission: to achieve “Driving Perfection,” the core ethos that defines the Gordon Murray Automotive brand. First unveiled in 2020 with a price tag of £2.36 million, the limited production run of 100 units sold out in just 48 hours, confirming the T.50’s position as an instant classic.
Receiving the King’s Award during a year in which the company also celebrates 60 years of Gordon Murray’s design legacy, the timing of the honour could not be more fitting. This July, the T.50 will take pride of place as Central Feature Marque at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, with a stunning sculpture and a showcase of Murray’s iconic race and road cars illustrating a career that has forever altered the automotive landscape.
A Moment of National Pride
Professor Gordon Murray CBE, company founder and Executive Chairman, expressed his gratitude:
“As a proud British business, it is such an immense honour for the whole Gordon Murray Group team to receive the King’s Award for Enterprise. The fact that the award specifically recognises innovation is a source of great pride as we aspire to deliver Driving Perfection through our innovative production of highly exclusive supercars.”
Chief Executive Phillip Lee added:
“Being a premium British company is a core part of our ethos. This royal recognition will motivate us to build on our principles and continue delivering unique, innovative supercars of the highest quality to our customers around the world.”
Professor Murray will personally accept the King’s Award at a Royal Reception at Windsor Castle, a fitting tribute to a lifetime of transformative automotive design.
The King’s Award for Enterprise stands as a powerful endorsement not only of the T.50’s revolutionary engineering, but also of Gordon Murray Group’s unwavering commitment to British innovation, craftsmanship, and performance — qualities that continue to reshape the future of the supercar.
