The long road

It was an early start on day 2 of the African Adventure, as the convoy left Gariep Dam at 6 am and aimed for Jhb on the very busy N1.

We made a brief stop at the Tiger Wheel & Tyre head office in Midrand for the final vehicle to join the convoy (it’s now 10 in total, and up to 29 people), and then carried on up North into Limpopo Province.

After a painful series of tollgates (there were at least 7 for the day), we turned off the N1 and took the N11 towards Mokopane (previously Potgietersrus).

With the sun setting and Botswana drawing tantalisingly close, we arrived at Big Fig Inn less than 10 km from the border post and set up camp for the night – after covering a total of 1 030 km for the day.

This area is renowned for its game farms, and we were already treated to an array of wildlife making the most of the cool relief of the evening and feeding along the fences. The kids, in particular, were delighted to spot their first giraffe, kudu, waterbuck and warthog of the trip.

Tomorrow we’re into Botswana … and then the adventure truly begins!
