The future of urban mobility is tightening its focus on electrification, industrial resilience and software-driven design, and a new agreement among leading global players signals how these forces are converging.
Renault Group, Volvo Group and CMA CGM Group have reached a binding agreement that reshapes the trajectory of their joint electric-van venture. Under the arrangement, Renault Group will acquire full ownership of Flexis SAS, bringing the project fully under its strategic and industrial stewardship while keeping development firmly rooted in France.
Subject to regulatory approval, the transaction is expected to become effective by the first half of 2026, marking a decisive step in the evolution of a programme designed to redefine the medium electric light-commercial vehicle segment.
A New Chapter for the Flexis Project
Launched in 2024 as a three-party collaboration, the Flexis initiative was conceived to create a next-generation electric van platform capable of meeting the rapidly changing demands of urban logistics.
The change in governance does not dilute the project’s original ambition. Instead, it provides a more streamlined path to execution, enabling Renault Group’s engineering and manufacturing teams to push forward with development of a breakthrough light commercial vehicle range built around advanced electrification and software integration.
At the heart of the programme lies a set of technological pillars designed to future-proof commercial mobility: a proprietary skateboard platform supporting flexible vehicle architectures, an 800-volt powertrain system delivering high-efficiency energy transfer, and a Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) architecture that allows continuous digital enhancement throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.
These innovations are particularly aligned with the accelerating decarbonization requirements of urban transport networks, where fleet operators increasingly seek vehicles that combine operational efficiency, lower emissions and intelligent connectivity.
Industrial Commitment Rooted in France
The project’s industrial footprint reflects a strong commitment to French manufacturing and engineering expertise. Approximately 1,300 people are currently contributing to the programme’s development across several sites in the Île-de-France region, including the Guyancourt Technocentre and the Villiers-Saint-Frédéric Light Commercial Vehicle Center of Excellence.
Final industrialization will take place at the Sandouville plant in Normandy, where production of the first model, the Renault Trafic Van E-Tech electric, is scheduled to begin by the end of 2026, maintaining the original timeline envisioned for the project.
This focus on domestic production reinforces the strategic objective of building a European benchmark for next-generation electric commercial mobility while sustaining high-value industrial employment within the region.
Distribution Partnership Continues Through 2027
The long-standing collaboration between Renault Group and Volvo Group in the light commercial vehicle segment will remain intact despite the governance change.
From 2027 onward, Volvo Group will market the new vehicles through Renault Trucks, ensuring commercial continuity and leveraging established distribution networks. The arrangement reflects the partners’ shared recognition of the vehicle range’s potential within international commercial fleets.
Supporting the Energy Transition of Logistics
The participation of CMA CGM Group during the project’s formative phase played an important role in advancing the initiative’s sustainability objectives. As global logistics operators face mounting pressure to reduce carbon emissions, the development of a fully electric medium van platform represents a meaningful step toward cleaner last-mile delivery ecosystems.
The agreement also underscores the broader strategic shift underway across the commercial mobility sector, where vehicle design is increasingly shaped by digital integration, energy efficiency and operational intelligence rather than purely mechanical performance.
Looking Toward the Electric Urban Future
With development continuing toward production launch, the Flexis programme stands as a symbol of Europe’s industrial response to the transformation of urban transportation.
Beginning with the Renault Trafic Van E-Tech electric from late 2026, the new generation of electric vans aims to provide logistics operators with vehicles capable of supporting high-frequency urban delivery cycles while reducing environmental impact.
More than a corporate transaction, the agreement represents the consolidation of a long-term technological vision: a fully electric, software-enhanced commercial vehicle platform designed for the logistics landscapes of tomorrow, and anchored in the industrial strength of France’s automotive ecosystem.
