Pretoria – 26 March 2010 – Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) will once again participate in the global phenomenon Earth Hour this weekend. FMCSA will support this worthy cause by switching off all possible lighting and power at both of its plants in South Africa between 20h30 and 21h30 on 27 March 2010.

Earth Hour 2010 is a global initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature. It’s a call to action to every individual, business and community to take a stand against Climate Change. FMCSA participated in the event last year and will once again stand up in support of the cause.

Originating in Sydney, Australia in 2007, the Earth Hour initiative proved more than worthwhile when it witnessed 2 million people coming together to switch off their lights for one hour for this vital cause. The initiative has grown into one of the greatest mass participations against global warming with approximately 1 billion people demonstrating their support last year.

“Ford is committed to a greener future and we are therefore pleased to be able to participate in this event,” says Jeffery Nemeth, president & CEO Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa. “We will show our support by switching off all non-essential lights and power at both our Silverton assembly plant and Struandale engine plant.”

As part of a global initiative FMCSA is striving towards a greener future and Earth Hour marks just one demonstration of support by the company. A number of initiatives are in the process of being implemented at the South African production plants. Currently FMCSA is in the process of replacing 13 000 light fittings at its plants with energy efficient lights.

“We need to all come out in support of climate change. Even the smallest contribution can make a huge difference. At Ford Motor Company we are continually looking at ways in which we can make a difference. We would like to encourage everyone who is able to, to stand up and be counted on Saturday night,” concluded Nemeth.
