PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, 11 June 2025 – With some of the most dramatic and diverse landscapes on the continent, South Africa is a 4×4 enthusiast’s dream. Whether it’s the iconic switchbacks of Sani Pass, the rugged drama of Baviaanskloof, or the untamed beauty of Swartberg Pass, our country offers countless trails that promise adventure and adrenaline in equal measure.

But while a capable vehicle like the Ford Ranger or Everest can take you far, true off-roading mastery goes beyond mechanical prowess. It calls for preparation, awareness, and skill—and that’s where education, like the Ford Adventure Club’s complimentary Level 1 Off-Road Training, becomes essential.

Get to Know Your Vehicle

The cornerstone of safe and enjoyable off-road driving is understanding your vehicle inside and out. For new Ford 4×4 owners, that means becoming familiar with intelligent drive systems, locking differentials, and critical measurements such as approach and departure angles.

Ford’s latest 4×4 offerings, including the Ranger Wildtrak, Tremor, Platinum and Raptor models, feature a suite of off-road technologies that make conquering difficult terrain far easier. The available on-demand four-wheel drive system (2H, 4A, 4H, 4L) adapts to the conditions underfoot, with 4A intelligently distributing torque between front and rear axles for optimal traction—even on high-traction surfaces.

And with approach angles of up to 30 degrees and departure angles of 25.6 degrees (23 degrees with a towbar), the Ford Ranger offers the kind of clearance and confidence needed to tackle challenging inclines and rocky declines.

Drive Modes That Do the Thinking for You

Modern Ford 4x4s come equipped with Terrain Management Systems that optimise performance at the twist of a dial. With drive modes including Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul, Slippery, Mud/Ruts, Sand and Rock Crawl, the system adjusts everything from throttle response and gearshifts to traction and stability control—ensuring that you’re always in the right mode for the challenge ahead.

Hill Descent Control helps manage steep descents with precision, while Trail Turn Assist (available on select derivatives) brakes the inside rear wheel at low speeds to tighten your turning radius—perfect for navigating narrow bush trails or technical switchbacks.

Technique Over Power

Off-roading isn’t about brute force—it’s about finesse. Gentle, deliberate throttle control allows tyres to maintain grip without spinning uselessly. A common adage in off-roading rings especially true: “As slow as possible, as fast as necessary.”

In sandy terrain, like the dunes of Atlantis or the beaches of Sodwana, maintaining steady momentum is key. In rocky areas, such as Lesotho’s passes or the Cederberg’s craggy trails, slow, controlled driving is safer and far more effective.

And don’t underestimate the value of tyre pressure. Lowering it slightly can significantly increase traction by expanding the tyre’s contact patch. Just remember to reinflate before returning to tarmac.

Preparation Is Non-Negotiable

Even the most capable 4x4s can get stuck. That’s why every trip should include essential recovery gear: a snatch strap, shackles, spade, air compressor, and first-aid kit are must-haves. So is a GPS, backup maps, and reliable communication—especially when exploring remote areas with little to no cell coverage.

Most importantly: never go alone. Having a second vehicle nearby can make the difference between an inconvenient delay and a serious emergency.

Join the Ford Adventure Club: Complimentary Training for New Owners

To support new Ford 4×4 owners in their journey toward off-road confidence, the Ford Adventure Club offers complimentary Level 1 Off-Road Training. This training, valid for 12 months after vehicle purchase, is designed for drivers of the Ford Ranger, Everest, and Raptor models.

The programme covers three key areas:

  • Vehicle Technology: Learn how to activate and utilise the full suite of off-road features, from diff locks and drive modes to SYNC® interface functions and the 360-degree camera system.
  • Obstacle Identification: Build your spatial awareness and understanding of approach and departure angles, learning how to assess and approach obstacles safely.
  • Practical Driving: Spend time behind the wheel on dedicated off-road tracks under expert guidance. Instructors provide real-time feedback, helping you understand how your vehicle responds in various situations.

By the end of the day, participants walk away not only with new knowledge but also with greater confidence in themselves and their Ford 4×4.

Drive With Purpose and Respect

Off-road driving is a privilege—one that comes with responsibilities. Staying on designated trails protects fragile ecosystems and ensures that these routes remain accessible for future adventurers. Remember: leave no trace and always strive to leave the environment better than you found it.

Live the Ranger Life

Mastering off-road driving is about more than learning to handle tough terrain—it’s about unlocking the full potential of your vehicle and embracing a lifestyle that celebrates adventure, capability, and respect for nature.

Whether you’re new to off-roading or looking to sharpen your skills, there’s no better way to start than with expert training and a community of like-minded enthusiasts. So gear up, head out, and live the Ranger life to the fullest.
