For more than three decades, Ford South Africa has championed environmental conservation, research, and education, solidifying its commitment to preserving the country’s rich biodiversity. This dedication was formalized in 2014 with the establishment of the Ford Wildlife Foundation (FWF), an initiative that now supports 29 environmental and wildlife conservation projects across South Africa and Mozambique.
Ford’s efforts extend beyond just providing financial support; the company also empowers partner organizations with locally produced Ford Ranger vehicles. These rugged and dependable 4x4s are essential tools that enable conservationists to reach remote and challenging areas, often inaccessible by conventional means. By supplying these vehicles, Ford allows its partners to focus their limited resources on crucial conservation work rather than on the purchase of new vehicles.

The foundation’s support is far-reaching, with projects spanning from the protection of endangered species like the Black Rhino and the Southern Ground-Hornbill to initiatives focused on habitat conservation, such as the Overberg Renosterveld Conservation Project. These efforts are vital in preserving South Africa’s diverse ecosystems, which are under constant threat from human activity and climate change.
Moreover, Ford’s commitment to education is equally significant. The FWF supports several initiatives that educate communities on the importance of environmental sustainability, aiming to foster a culture of conservation among future generations. Projects like the Lapalala Wilderness School and the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa’s (WESSA) International Schools Programme are instrumental in this regard, offering children and young adults the knowledge and skills necessary to become conservation champions.
As Ford South Africa celebrates its centenary, the Ford Wildlife Foundation stands as a testament to the company’s unwavering dedication to both its community and the environment. Through a combination of innovative manufacturing practices and a deep commitment to conservation, Ford South Africa is not just building vehicles but is also helping to build a sustainable future for the nation.
