Durban, South Africa – 21 July 2025 — The countdown has begun for one of South Africa’s most distinguished automotive showcases, as the 2025 L’Atelier Paris Concours d’Elegance Durban returns to the elegant coastal setting of Umhlanga Rocks on Sunday, 7 September. Now in its fourth year, this growing celebration of automotive beauty, craftsmanship and history is aiming to cement its place alongside world-renowned events like the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.
Held once again at the serene Chris Saunders Park, where manicured lawns and tranquil fountains set the stage for automotive and fashion excellence, the 2025 edition promises to be a feast for the senses. Organiser John Aritho is casting the net wider than ever before, calling on classic car owners from across South Africa to enter vehicles for either judging or display.
“In 2024, we saw our vision come to life, with enthusiasts travelling from Johannesburg and the Free State to join KwaZulu-Natal’s vibrant classic car community,” says Aritho. “This year, we’re inviting entries from every corner of South Africa — from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, from Knysna to Bloemfontein — to turn this into a truly national event.”
A Grand Route for Grand Machines
This year’s build-up to the concours includes a special journey designed with classic car aficionados in mind. Stuart Grant, editor of Classic Car Africa and 2025’s chief judge for the concours, has curated an unforgettable route for Gauteng-based entrants. Spanning two days of scenic, nostalgic cruising, the drive revisits the historic pre-highway route from Johannesburg to the coast, weaving through charming towns like Volksrust, Newcastle, Winterton, and the meandering Midlands.
“Classic motoring is not about speed — it’s about the experience,” notes Grant. “That’s why we’ve designed a route that’s as enjoyable as it is memorable. It’s a tribute to the golden age of motoring, and it fits perfectly with the spirit of the Concours d’Elegance.”
Entrants will spend a night in Winterton before making their way through the breathtaking landscapes of Rosetta, Nottingham Road and Balgowan, eventually reaching Durban via Pietermaritzburg, Inchanga and the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

Beauty, Heritage and Elegance
The 2024 edition saw John Hatfield crowned overall winner with his superb 1968 Lancia Flavia, a fitting tribute to the event’s emphasis on elegance. Close on his heels was Alan Grant, Stuart’s father, whose meticulously preserved 1958 Triumph TR3 earned him second place.
While competition plays a part, Aritho is quick to remind that this event celebrates more than just perfection.
“We use the term ‘Concours’ often, but its full name is Concours d’Elegance — a competition of elegance,” he says. “It’s not just about mechanical precision, but also about heritage, design, and that certain timeless grace that a truly special car exudes.”
The setting of Chris Saunders Park further elevates the sense of sophistication. Attendees can expect not only a display of rare and significant classics, from pre-war legends like the 1938 Mercedes-Benz 170, but also a captivating haute couture fashion show that aligns with the theme of enduring elegance. With models showcasing both contemporary and vintage-inspired creations, fashion will complement the cars in style and spirit.
A Springtime Celebration
Set for the first Sunday of spring, this year’s Concours is about more than cars — it’s about community, culture and celebration.
“Durban has so much to offer, and this event is a way of shining a spotlight on our warm weather, warm waters, and warm-hearted people,” Aritho says. “It’s a lifestyle showcase as much as a motoring one.”
Spaces are limited, and Aritho encourages early registration — whether for judged entry or display-only participation — to avoid disappointment. With entries open to all marques, models and eras, the 2025 edition promises to be the most diverse and dazzling yet.
