On World EV Day, a recent survey of over 6,700 South African car owners highlights a marked shift in local motoring preferences: diesel drivers are increasingly exploring plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV) alternatives, drawn by the promise of performance, efficiency, and everyday usability.
Volvo Car South Africa (VCSA) reports that hybrids are hitting the sweet spot for discerning drivers who value both power and practicality. While diesel remains trusted for torque and long-distance capability, hybrids are emerging as a logical next step, offering a seamless balance between environmental responsibility, running costs, and driving enjoyment.
Hybrids: The Best of Both Worlds
According to the survey, 60% of diesel owners are likely to consider a hybrid within the next three to five years. They appreciate vehicles that deliver strong performance, cutting-edge technology, and practical day-to-day usability. Volvo’s PHEV lineup exemplifies this trend, combining responsive torque, impressive fuel savings, and proven battery reliability.
The XC60 Recharge demonstrates the potential of electrified performance. Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor produces 340 kW of power and 709 N.m of torque. Yet, despite these figures, the XC60 Recharge manages a combined fuel consumption rating of just 1.6 L/100 km and emits only 37 g/km of CO₂. With a 19 kWh battery, the SUV can travel up to 82 km on electric power alone—significantly reducing fuel use without compromising the dynamic performance expected from a premium SUV.
“Diesel drivers are discerning. They want flexibility, power, and cost efficiency. That’s exactly what hybrids deliver, without the compromises,” says Grant Locke, Managing Director of Volvo Car South Africa.

EVs: A Glimpse of the Future
Interest in fully electric driving is also rising. The survey found that 38% of diesel owners are considering an EV, driven by environmental considerations and the appeal of advanced driving experiences. Volvo’s EX90 already offers a range of over 600 km, making long-distance journeys feasible, while the forthcoming ES90 promises up to 700 km of range. Fast-charging technology enhances convenience, adding 100 km of range in just 10 minutes at 350 kW chargers.
Concerns about charging infrastructure are being addressed through comprehensive support for EV owners. Volvo facilitates access to public chargers and home wallbox installations, simplifying the transition and making daily electric driving practical and cost-effective.
Making the Switch Seamless
Volvo’s PHEVs and EVs deliver the priorities modern drivers value: performance, efficiency, and peace of mind. With clear comparisons of total cost of ownership and a growing charging network, the transition from diesel to electrified driving has never been easier.
“With more than half of diesel owners planning to purchase a vehicle within the next year, plug-in hybrids offer a compelling and practical upgrade,” concludes Locke. “For those ready to explore fully electric motoring, Volvo’s award-winning lineup—including the recently introduced EX30 Cross Country—demonstrates how seamless and rewarding the experience can be.”
As South African drivers increasingly consider hybrid and electric alternatives, Volvo’s electrified range positions itself as a credible, practical, and desirable option for the next generation of motoring.
