Johannesburg, South Africa – Against the backdrop of the legendary Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, the recent EVolution event provided a powerful platform for South Africa’s fleet industry to engage in meaningful dialogue about the shift to electric mobility. Hosted by WesBank, the event drew a distinguished cohort of medium and large fleet operators, offering them an immersive experience into the present and future of electric vehicles (EVs).
The EVolution event wasn’t just another industry gathering — it was a moment of inflection for fleet operators navigating the transition from internal combustion engines (ICEs) to cleaner, smarter alternatives. With the global EV market gaining extraordinary traction — surging from 14 million units sold in 2023 to 17 million in 2024 — the timing of the event couldn’t have been more fitting. According to GreenCape, this rapid global uptake is fuelled by a combination of rising fuel prices, increasing availability of EV models, and the growing cost competitiveness of electric drivetrains.
Closer to home, South Africa’s EV market is beginning to build momentum. Sales of electric vehicles totalled 3,487 units in Q1 2025, up from 3,042 during the same period in 2024 and 1,665 in 2023, according to data from naamsa. While still modest compared to global volumes, the growth trajectory is unmistakable — and accelerating. Government plans to introduce local manufacturing tax incentives, expand charging infrastructure, and implement carbon-reduction strategies in the private sector are expected to further catalyse this progress.
However, the path to widespread fleet electrification in South Africa is not without its obstacles. Infrastructure limitations, questions around total cost of ownership (TCO), and operational feasibility remain critical considerations. As Linda Cele, Products Head Key Accounts & Partnerships: Fleet Management and Leasing at WesBank, noted:
“Fleet electrification in South Africa is still in its developmental stages, with much of the current work focused on pilot projects across various industries. Our EVolution event provided a vital platform to address the uncertainties that hinder widespread adoption and offer practical insights based on local and global experiences.”
Indeed, one of the event’s most valuable contributions was its spotlight on active pilot projects across the country, offering real-world case studies to inform and inspire. These included:
- Private logistics operators testing EV deployment across Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town
- Retailers experimenting with electric delivery vans in urban environments
- Mining companies piloting electric heavy-duty vehicles and buses in controlled on-site applications
- Municipal authorities in eThekwini and Cape Town assessing the viability of electric buses for public transport
Attendees also had the opportunity to drive the latest Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), gaining critical hands-on experience. Complementing these test drives were masterclasses and presentations on EV financing, TCO modelling, and the strategic role of telematics in optimising fleet performance and sustainability.

The event placed strong emphasis on partnerships — a cornerstone of successful fleet electrification. Through panel discussions and networking opportunities, attendees explored collaborations with OEMs, charging infrastructure providers, and data analytics firms that are essential to building a robust electric mobility ecosystem.
WesBank’s proactive stance in spearheading industry transformation was evident throughout the day.
“WesBank is very proud of its efforts in moving the industry forward,” Cele affirmed. “We remain committed to supporting South African businesses in their transition to electric mobility, providing the expertise, financial solutions, and industry connections necessary to navigate this transformative journey successfully.”
As South Africa continues to refine its EV policy framework and fleet operators gain access to more sophisticated tools and support, events like EVolution are proving indispensable. They do more than showcase electric vehicles — they spark the conversations and collaborations that will drive real, lasting change.
