The second round of the Silverlakes Farm Hotel SA Endurance Series unfolded with an intense finale at Zwartkops Raceway, Pretoria, this past weekend. With less than five minutes remaining, the race was almost turned on its head when the leader, Charl Visser, driving the powerful Mustang-engined Nova, skidded off-track into the gravel trap. Despite this mishap, Visser’s substantial lead allowed his team to still clinch the victory.
The race began under clear skies at Zwartkops Raceway, where the thrill of speed and strategy played out spectacularly. Visser, who had been leading comfortably, found himself in trouble after attempting to navigate past a slower competitor and choosing an ill-fated line, which sent him veering off the track. Despite his setback, his earlier performance, which included setting the fastest lap, ensured his team stayed in contention.
Close on his heels was the team of Stuart White and Xolile Letlaka in the Into Africa Lamborghini, who finished a commendable second despite earlier mechanical troubles with their vehicle’s ABS system. They closed what initially was a three-lap deficit down to two, showcasing resilience and skill.
In third place, the duo of Mike McLoughlin and Steve Clark showcased their prowess in the Chev-powered Slingshot Backdraft, followed by the hard-fighting Class C team of Kashen Naicker and Anthony Pretorius in their Alfa Romeo.
Qualifying rounds earlier in the day set the tone for a high-stakes event. Chris Visser stormed to pole position, clocking a lap that was faster than the current outright lap record for the circuit. The competitive spirit was palpable, as the top three qualifiers in Class A all broke the one-minute barrier, setting the stage for a riveting race.
As the race progressed, the strategic element of endurance racing came to the forefront. Teams had to manage their pace, navigate mechanical challenges, and execute flawless pit stops. The Into Africa Lamborghini team’s recovery from an early setback to a podium finish was a testament to their strategic acumen and the dynamic nature of endurance racing.

The race was not without its dramas, as a safety car was deployed when a competitor’s vehicle encountered engine trouble. This incident slowed the pace temporarily but added another layer of strategy as teams adjusted their plans on the fly.
In the support races, the Super Vee category provided its own share of excitement with tight battles across the classes. Allen Meyer edged out Jannie Gerber in the traditional Vee class, while Lushen Ramchander claimed victory in the modern Super Vee class after a series of intense duels.
As the series prepares to move to the iconic Aldo Scribante Raceway for its next round, the excitement continues to build. The upcoming night race promises to be a rigorous test of endurance for both the cars and their drivers, ensuring another thrilling chapter in the championship saga.
This round at Zwartkops was a perfect illustration of the unpredictability and excitement inherent in endurance racing. With its mix of speed, strategy, and unexpected developments, it kept fans on the edge of their seats until the very end. The next round in Aldo Scribante, under the night sky, is eagerly anticipated as teams and drivers look to overcome the unique challenges it will present.
