Maserati MSG Racing faced significant challenges in the first race of the 2024 Portland E-Prix double-header. Despite a strong effort and late-race energy management, the team missed out on scoring points.
Heading into the penultimate race weekend of Formula E’s 10th season, the Monaco-based team had high hopes. However, initial practice sessions revealed difficulties in finding pace, leading to a challenging start in qualifying. Both Maximilian Günther and Jehan Daruvala were unable to advance to the duel stages, starting from 17th and 18th after grid penalties.

Race Dynamics and Strategy
Despite a difficult start, the team remained optimistic, strategically positioned to save crucial energy during the race. Günther and Daruvala began by holding their positions, with Daruvala taking an early Attack Mode on lap four, leveraging the advantage while Günther maintained his ground.
As the race unfolded, both drivers adjusted their strategies, building an energy advantage over their competitors and aiming for the top 10. Günther’s strategic use of Attack Mode saw him break into the points-paying positions by lap 15, reaching as high as sixth place.
Unfortunately, a late-race incident involving contact between Günther and Daruvala on lap 24 forced Günther to retire, and Daruvala finished in 16th place.
Driver and Team Reflections
Maximilian Günther, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing:
“It was a tough day for us. We struggled with pace all weekend, and qualifying was particularly challenging. Starting far from the front made it difficult, but we aimed to execute a strong race on energy. Unfortunately, a late-race incident ended my race prematurely.”
Jehan Daruvala, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing:
“Today’s race was frustrating, and I apologize to the team. My brakes locked up into Turn One late in the race, and I couldn’t avoid Max. It was my mistake, and I take full responsibility. Tomorrow is a new day, and we aim to score points to make up for today.”
Cyril Blais, Deputy Team Principal, Maserati MSG Racing:
“Today’s outcome was disappointing and not reflective of our goals. We have a lot to debrief, but I’m confident we can make necessary adjustments to come back stronger. We have another opportunity to score points tomorrow.”
Giovanni Sgro, Head of Maserati Corse:
“Today was unfortunate and a reminder of how challenging racing can be. Portland’s fast circuit proved tough for us. Each race is a learning opportunity, and we remain committed to our electrification goals with the Folgore range. I’m confident our drivers will deliver strong performances in the upcoming rounds.”
