This past Wednesday, the Fleet Safety Awards 2024 illuminated a night dedicated to honouring the champions of African road safety. Hosted in a dazzling ceremony, the event made history as the first of its kind, dedicated to recognising outstanding contributions to fleet and road safety.
The third annual awards saw the highest number of accolades handed out to date, reflecting the growing importance and impact of safety initiatives in the region. MasterDrive CEO, Eugene Herbert, underscored the significance of the evening:

A total of R200,000 in cash prizes was awarded across nine categories, supplemented by additional prizes aimed at fostering ongoing safety advancements among the winners.

The night opened with the SABOA Road Warrior Award, recognising individual excellence in safe bus operations. The first recipient of the ceremony was Ettiah Tsatsimpe from Tshwane Rapid Transit, celebrated for their unwavering dedication to passenger safety and exemplary service.

Unitrans Passenger claimed this prestigious title, with judges commending the organisation’s comprehensive safety programmes. Their initiatives have made a tangible difference in the public transport sector, saving lives and setting a benchmark for safety excellence.
SABOA Best Fleet Manager
Unitrans Passenger’s Marthinus Mulder was recognised as SABOA Best Fleet Manager. His ability to unite a team of operators under a shared commitment to safety exemplifies the leadership needed to transform the industry.
Most Improved Truck Stop powered by Safer Stops
Vaal Truck Inn, strategically located on the N3, was hailed as a critical safety hub for long-haul drivers. By providing secure rest areas with essential services, the truck stop sets the standard for safety and convenience in the transport network.

African Sugar Logistics received this accolade, a category made especially poignant by the fact that employees nominated their employer. The award underscores the company’s dedication to supporting its drivers, recognising that safe roads begin with well-supported teams.

This category celebrated the skill and dedication of drivers across South Africa’s roads. From light to heavy commercial vehicles, the winners embodied a steadfast commitment to safety:
- Light Commercial Vehicle: Jerome Dlamini (VitalAire)
- Medium Commercial Vehicle: Akona Mbolkwana (ACT Logistics)
- Heavy Commercial Vehicle: Shadrack Ngobeni (DP World) – also crowned the overall winner.
