The BMW Group has cemented its position at the forefront of automotive innovation with a remarkable double victory for its new BMW iX3, the first model of the highly anticipated Neue Klasse. At the 2026 World Car Awards, an international jury of 98 motoring journalists recognised the iX3 not only as the “World Car of the Year” but also as the “World Electric Vehicle” of 2026, demonstrating the model’s exceptional versatility, performance, and technological sophistication. These victories mark the tenth and eleventh World Car Awards for the BMW Group, adding to a legacy of industry-leading vehicles that have consistently set benchmarks for driving pleasure and engineering excellence.
Presented at the IAA Mobility 2025, the BMW iX3 quickly established itself as a game-changer in the electric vehicle segment. With a range of up to 805 kilometres, rapid charging capabilities of up to 400 kW, and highly efficient energy consumption of just 17.9–15.1 kWh per 100 km (WLTP), the iX3 is a compelling example of sustainable performance. Its driving dynamics are elevated by BMW’s innovative Heart of Joy high-performance control unit and Dynamic Performance Control, ensuring precise handling, confident traction, and smooth braking that defines the brand’s ethos of Sheer Driving Pleasure.
The interior introduces the BMW Panoramic iDrive, a breakthrough infotainment system featuring the BMW Panoramic Vision, a 17.9-inch central display, an optional 3D head-up display, and Shy Tech multifunction steering wheel controls. This advanced system, powered by BMW Operating System X, allows seamless updates and contextual control, combining convenience with cutting-edge digital functionality. Complemented by two electric motors delivering 345 kW/469 hp and 645 Nm of torque, the BMW iX3 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 210 km/h, blending efficiency with exhilarating performance.
The iX3’s success is built on rigorous evaluation by the World Car Awards jury, who test drove 43 electric and 57 general vehicles across 33 countries. Their independent assessments influence more than 413 million readers worldwide, shaping automotive purchasing decisions and highlighting BMW’s commitment to innovation. Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse BMW, emphasises the model’s role in initiating a new era for the brand, with a design language, range, and driver assistance technologies that will extend across the BMW portfolio.
BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, featuring a new high-voltage battery concept and 800-volt system, ensures faster charging, longer ranges, and bidirectional charging capabilities. This technological leap, combined with the Heart of Joy superbrain control architecture, delivers a driving experience that is both efficient and dynamic, reinforcing BMW’s vision for the future of mobility. Under the leadership of Oliver Zipse, named “World Car Person of the Year 2026,” the company has successfully navigated a period of profound transformation, setting the stage for the Neue Klasse to redefine the standards of premium electric mobility.
