Charity urges those in need to reach out early, as new data shows continued financial hardship across the industry
21 July 2025 – Automotive industry charity Ben has launched the third year of its dedicated Summer Holidays Support Programme, offering a vital lifeline to families grappling with the relentless cost-of-living crisis. As financial burdens deepen for many across the sector, Ben is reminding the UK’s automotive community that help is available — from essential support to the creation of joyful family moments.
The charity’s summer programme provides a wide range of practical assistance, including help with food, utility bills, and back-to-school essentials such as uniforms and PE kits. For families in urgent need, financial grants and emotional support are available, alongside opportunities to spend meaningful time together through funded activities or day trips — a chance to make cherished memories during what can otherwise be a stressful season.
Cost-of-Living Pressures Still Taking Their Toll
According to Ben’s latest research, the impact of financial hardship remains severe within the automotive industry:
- 1 in 6 workers reported skipping meals due to money issues
- 1 in 5 have struggled with debt
- 1 in 4 of those considering leaving the sector cite financial problems as a key reason
Over the past year, Ben responded to more than 15,000 helpline enquiries and delivered over 700 financial grants to individuals and families in need — figures that highlight both the demand for support and the charity’s vital role within the sector.
With schools closed for the summer, financial pressures often intensify for parents. The cost of childcare, food, activities and school preparation can overwhelm already tight household budgets. That’s why Ben is urging automotive workers and their dependents to contact the charity as early as possible — especially during the summer holidays.
Empowering the Automotive Family
Ben’s new vision for a thriving automotive community centres on holistic wellbeing — helping individuals and families to think well, feel well, live well and work well. This approach recognises the interconnectedness of mental health, financial security, family life and work satisfaction.
“While summer should be an enjoyable time when families come together, it can bring real stress for those facing money worries,” said Rachel Clift, Ben’s CEO. “That’s why, in addition to vital financial assistance, we’re helping families create meaningful experiences — a fun day out or shared activity that fosters wellbeing and creates lasting memories.”
She continued: “Cost-of-living pressures continue to hit home, and our latest annual health and wellbeing survey shows stress and financial concerns remain among the biggest challenges for our sector. That’s why our purpose — empowering our automotive family to live their best lives — is so important. We urge anyone struggling to reach out early. It could make all the difference.”

Real Stories, Real Impact
Families who’ve received support from Ben have expressed deep gratitude for the difference it has made:
“All uniforms are now purchased. Thanks to you, I have one less thing to worry about.”
“Thank you for being there for me. It means a lot.”
“This is amazing… I don’t even know how to thank you for all the help and support.”
This year, BMTA Trust has stepped in to strengthen the programme by contributing £3,000 towards its operation — helping Ben reach even more families during this critical period.
