Audi has never treated the five-cylinder engine as just another powertrain. For five decades it has been the brand’s mechanical signature, a distinctive heartbeat that helped define rally dominance, performance saloons and modern compact sports cars. Now that legacy is being celebrated with the unveiling of the RS 3 competition limited, a highly exclusive performance model restricted to just 750 units worldwide. Only 11 examples are destined for the UK, making the car not only a technical showcase but also an immediate collector’s item.
The special edition marks 50 years since the first appearance of Audi’s five-cylinder engine in the second-generation Audi 100 back in 1976. Over the years the unusual cylinder configuration became synonymous with the brand’s motorsport heritage, particularly during the golden era of rallying where the Audi Sport quattro cemented the reputation of the turbocharged five-cylinder. With the RS 3 competition limited, Audi Sport brings that story full circle, combining heritage cues with the most advanced evolution of the legendary powerplant.
At the centre of the car sits the latest version of the 2.5-litre TFSI inline five. Delivering 294 kW and 500 Nm, the turbocharged engine remains a rare proposition in the compact performance segment. The configuration produces a firing sequence of 1-2-4-5-3, a rhythm that generates the unmistakable offbeat soundtrack that enthusiasts immediately recognise. It is a sound that has become as much a part of Audi’s performance identity as quattro all-wheel drive.
Performance figures reinforce the emotional appeal. The RS 3 competition limited accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 180 mph. Audi has also ensured that the engine’s character is fully experienced by the driver. The RS sports exhaust system features fully variable flap control, allowing the tone of the five-cylinder to shift from restrained to aggressive depending on the selected drive mode. Reduced insulation around the firewall further enhances the connection between engine and occupants, allowing the distinctive growl of the turbocharged unit to reach the cabin more directly.
Driving dynamics receive significant attention in this special edition. For the first time on the RS 3, Audi Sport introduces a coilover suspension system paired with a new, stiffer rear stabiliser. The system has been developed specifically for the competition limited and is designed to provide both precise control on track and adaptability on the road.
The twin-tube shock absorbers use stainless steel at the front and aluminium at the rear, materials chosen to maximise rigidity while improving cooling under demanding conditions. External reservoirs at the front increase the hydraulic fluid volume and allow the dampers to maintain consistent performance even during prolonged high-load driving.
The system offers extensive adjustability. Compression damping can be tuned to influence how quickly the suspension compresses when the car loads up during cornering. Drivers can modify low-speed compression across twelve steps, allowing the car to be dialled towards sharper turn-in and increased lateral grip or relaxed for improved comfort. High-speed compression, adjustable across fifteen steps, determines how the chassis responds to sudden impacts such as bumps or abrupt steering inputs. Stiffer settings provide more direct feedback and sharper responses, while softer settings smooth out rough road surfaces.
Rebound damping, adjustable in sixteen steps, controls how the suspension extends after compression. Higher rebound settings result in slower spring extension and extremely precise body control, while lower settings allow greater compliance and improved ride comfort. The effect is a level of chassis tuning that allows drivers to tailor the RS 3 competition limited’s behaviour to road conditions or personal preference.
Further stability is delivered by a new tubular rear stabiliser with thicker walls and a stiffness rating of 85 N/mm, noticeably higher than the standard model. Rear spring rates have also been increased to 80 N/mm. Together, these modifications enhance directional stability and improve agility when powering out of fast corners.
The chassis is complemented by Audi’s torque splitter, which allows fully variable torque distribution between the rear wheels. During cornering, the system directs more power to the outside wheel while applying slight braking to the inside wheel. This encourages rotation and positions the car perfectly for corner exit. Ceramic brakes with red callipers ensure stopping power matches the car’s performance credentials, offering reduced weight and exceptional resistance to thermal fade.
Aerodynamic refinements also play a role. A newly developed roof spoiler and front aerodynamic elements reduce lift at both axles. These components were shaped in the wind tunnel specifically for the competition limited, enhancing stability at high speed while reinforcing the car’s aggressive stance.
Visually, the RS 3 competition limited leaves little doubt about its intent. The front end features a sharpened interpretation of Audi’s Singleframe grille flanked by prominent air intakes and a more pronounced front lip. Matte carbon elements appear throughout the exterior, lending the car a technical motorsport-inspired aesthetic.
At the front corners, stacked carbon canards sit above the vertical blades of the air curtains, while the split front lip accentuates the car’s width. Carbon mirror caps, side skirts and a rear spoiler reinforce the theme, as does the carbon trim above the large functional diffuser at the rear.
The car rides on 19-inch wheels finished in matte Neodymium gold, their ten cross-spokes filling the arches with a distinctive visual flourish. Darkened matrix LED headlights provide a unique visual signature. When locking or unlocking the vehicle, their segments illuminate in a 1-2-4-5-3 sequence, subtly referencing the five-cylinder firing order.
In the UK, every example will be finished in Malachite green. The colour nods to the iconic Audi Sport quattro that played a key role in rallying’s golden age and established the reputation of the five-cylinder engine in motorsport.
Inside, the cabin reinforces the car’s exclusivity with a striking colour palette of black, Neodymium gold and Ginger white. Door lighting projects the “RS 3 competition limited” script onto the ground when the doors open, while the same lettering appears on the floor mats, headrest covers and the trunk carpet.
A numbered plaque positioned in the centre console identifies each car’s place within the 750-unit production run. RS bucket seats with pronounced bolsters hold occupants firmly in place during spirited driving. Their outer sections are finished in black leather while the centre panels use Neodymium gold Dinamica microfiber. Ginger white stitching highlights the diamond-pattern seat design and runs across the interior surfaces.
The rear seats mirror this treatment with Dinamica centres and matching contrast stitching. Carbon seat backs on the front chairs add another visual reminder of the car’s motorsport influence.
Technology remains firmly driver focused. A 10.1-inch central display provides access to RS-specific performance data including coolant temperature, oil temperatures, torque splitter status and brake conditions. Tyre pressures and temperatures are also displayed, ensuring drivers have a complete overview of the vehicle’s operating parameters.
The steering wheel, flattened at both the top and bottom, features a Ginger white centre marker to help drivers identify the straight-ahead position during fast cornering. The Audi virtual cockpit plus adopts a special design with white instrument backgrounds, a tribute to the white dials of the original RS2 Avant from 1994. The display also includes live readings for power output, torque, G-forces, acceleration and a lap timer, while launch control activates starting lights to indicate the perfect moment to accelerate.
With only 750 units available globally and just 11 destined for the UK, the RS 3 Sportback competition limited represents an exceptionally rare addition to Audi’s performance catalogue. Priced at £92,855 on the road, the car combines distinctive design elements, a highly adjustable chassis and the charismatic five-cylinder engine that has defined the brand’s performance identity for half a century.
UK deliveries are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, ensuring that this celebratory chapter in Audi’s five-cylinder story will soon find its way from Ingolstadt’s engineering halls to a select group of fortunate garages.
