Recent independent tests, initiated by Point S, the largest multi-brand automotive service and tyre sales network globally, reveal significant performance differences among premium, mid-range, and budget tyres. Conducted by the renowned TÜV SÜD Product Service, the study assessed various tyre brands on safety-critical parameters using the popular 18” tyre size, 225/40R18 92Y.
The findings showcased that premium tyres notably outshine their mid-range and budget counterparts, especially under wet conditions. In wet braking scenarios, mid-range tyres required an additional 7.65 feet to halt from 49.7 mph, whereas budget tyres needed an extra 14.67 feet, equivalent to the size of a large SUV or an adult female giraffe.
Premium tyres consistently topped the charts in road grip and handling tests as well. For instance, mid-range tyres needed a speed reduction of 1.86 mph to match the premium tyres’ handling on wet surfaces, with budget tyres lagging even further behind, requiring a 3.11 mph reduction.

Point S initiated these tests to provide its network with robust, data-backed insights on tyre safety, assisting them in advising their customers effectively. This initiative aligns with ongoing debates about the cost-effectiveness of premium tyres, especially in a price-sensitive market.
Fabien Bouquet, CEO of Point S International, emphasized the importance of safety in tyre selection, especially in today’s economic scenario where inflation affects pricing decisions. He noted, “Our aim is to equip our customers with factual information to make informed decisions about tyre safety, proving that premium tyres offer superior performance in critical safety tests.”
To disseminate these crucial findings, Point S has released marketing materials in over 20 languages to its network and customers, highlighting the importance of investing in quality tyres for enhanced safety and performance.
This independent testing serves as a critical reminder of the potential safety trade-offs when opting for less expensive tyre options and underscores the value of investing in premium tyres for both safety and performance benefits.
