Salon Privé, held annually at the majestic Blenheim Palace, has established itself as a premier event for classic car enthusiasts. This year, the Concours will spotlight a prestigious selection of Ferrari models from the 1950s and 1960s, celebrating the evolution of Maranello’s iconic vehicles from race-focused machines to world-renowned road-going sports cars. The event, presented by Aviva Private Clients, will take place from August 28th to 29th, 2024, and promises to be a memorable exhibition of Ferrari’s golden era.
From Racing Heritage to Road Legends
The evolution of Ferrari in the 1950s and 1960s represents a significant shift in automotive history. From the purebred racing machines of the early ‘50s to the opulent and powerful road cars of the mid-‘60s, Ferrari’s journey is epitomized by two remarkable models featured at Salon Privé: the 1953 Ferrari 166 MM and the 1966 Ferrari 500 Superfast. These vehicles not only illustrate Ferrari’s progress but also underscore its commitment to excellence in both performance and design.
The 1953 Ferrari 166 MM/53 Spider by Vignale
The 1953 Ferrari 166 MM/53 Spider by Vignale is a testament to Ferrari’s racing prowess and engineering excellence. Introduced in 1949 as a competitor in long-distance races, the 166 MM quickly made a name for itself with its advanced V12 engine and lightweight construction. Initially produced with bodies by Touring, the 166 MM was later re-bodied by various coachbuilders, including Vignale, who crafted the stunning Spider version.
The 166 MM was a dominant force in motorsport, claiming victories in prestigious events such as the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio, and 24 Hours of Le Mans. By 1953, the model had evolved, featuring a more powerful engine and updated carburettors. The Spider at Salon Privé, chassis #0308M, has a rich history, having been owned by notable figures such as Dominican diplomat Porfirio Rubirosa and Ferrari collector Bernard Worth. After a comprehensive restoration, this Ferrari remains a highlight of the event.

The 1966 Ferrari 500 Superfast
In stark contrast to the 166 MM’s racing heritage, the 1966 Ferrari 500 Superfast represents the height of luxury and performance in Ferrari’s road car lineup. Launched in 1964, the 500 Superfast was Ferrari’s most extravagant and expensive road car, designed with an eye towards the affluent American market. Only 37 units were produced, with just eight being right-hand-drive for the UK market.
The 500 Superfast featured Ferrari’s largest and most powerful V12 engine, delivering 400bhp and a top speed of 170mph. The model’s opulence is reflected in its design and features, including factory air conditioning and power-assisted steering. The 500 Superfast at Salon Privé, chassis #8897, is the last of its kind, showcasing a meticulous restoration to its original Avorio color and a comprehensive interior renovation.
A Tribute to Ferrari’s Legacy
Andrew Bagley, Salon Privé Concours Chairman, remarks, “These two unique Ferraris are the crowning glories of Salon Privé’s Ferraris of the ‘50s and ‘60s class. They perfectly illustrate Enzo’s pragmatism in developing an exclusive and profitable road car business to fund his passion for racing during the 1950s and ‘60s before Fiat bought into the business.”
The Salon Privé Concours will also feature other Ferrari highlights, including:
- 1950 Ferrari 166 MM/212: A famed model that led the Mille Miglia in 1951.
- 1957 Ferrari 335 S: Known for its illustrious race career with drivers like Stirling Moss and Mike Hawthorn.
- 1963 Ferrari 400 Superamerica: An exceptional matching-numbers car in Oro Chiaro.
- 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB: A fully restored short-nose series-1 model in rare Verde Pino color.
- 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO: One of only 18 lightweight cars produced, with a single ownership since 1988.
- 1990 Ferrari Testa Rossa: An unrestored, two-owner car with just 101 miles from new.
- 1996 Ferrari F50s: Two examples from a total production of 349, one in Rosso Barchetta and the other in Rosso Corsa.
The Salon Privé Concours at Blenheim Palace promises to be a celebration of Ferrari’s engineering excellence and historical significance, offering a unique glimpse into the evolution of one of the most revered brands in automotive history.
