This year’s Chalke History Festival, set to take place from June 24 to June 30, marks an exciting expansion as it introduces automotive-themed events for the first time in its 14-year history. Held in the picturesque Wessex countryside, the festival is expected to attract a wide audience with its vibrant blend of talks, performances, and living history exhibits. This quintessential English summer gathering offers a rich tapestry of experiences including gourmet food, camping, and an enchanting festival atmosphere.
Television personality James May, known for his work on “Top Gear” and “The Grand Tour,” headlines the motor-themed events. May, who has explored automotive cultures around the globe, will present a talk titled “The Car: Did We Get It Wrong?” on Saturday, June 29, pondering the complexities and evolution of car manufacturing.

Motorsport enthusiasts will have much to look forward to on Thursday, June 27, as former F1 driver Jan Lammers and five-time Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro discuss the thrilling world of Formula One and endurance racing. Their panel, moderated by Greg Mills, a noted writer on South African motoring history, promises insights into the high-speed world of professional racing.
The automotive theme continues on Sunday, June 30, with Jason Barlow, a respected authority on automobiles, and Richard Sutton, former motorsport presenter, exploring the intrinsic value and soul of cars in their discussion, “The Soul of the Machine.” They will delve into the artistry and emotional connection that define iconic vehicles, questioning the impact of modern technological advancements on this legacy.
Adding to the festival’s allure, historic WWII aircraft, the Spitfire and Hurricane, will return to the skies above Chalke Valley. Coinciding with the 80th anniversary of D-Day, this aerial display promises a breathtaking tribute to aviation history.
The full festival lineup is impressive, featuring notable personalities such as Michael Palin, Max Hastings, and Bettany Hughes, among others. Ticket information and the complete schedule are available on the Chalke History Festival website.
