56 years after the first Volvo made the historic climb, the all-electric EX30 Cross Country has written a new chapter in South African motoring history. As the first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) to conquer Sani Pass, one of the country’s most iconic and challenging mountain routes, the EX30 demonstrates that electric mobility is not just for city streets—it can thrive in the most extreme terrain.
A Trail Steeped in History
Sani Pass is more than a road; it is a journey through time and terrain. Long before engines roared up its steep gradients, Basotho shepherds navigated these rugged mountains to trade livestock and goods, negotiating narrow, twisting paths that demanded both courage and skill. In 1969, a Volvo first ascended Sani Pass, showcasing the engineering resilience that would define the brand. Fast forward 56 years, and the EX30 Cross Country repeats that ascent—this time powered entirely by electricity—demonstrating the evolution of automotive innovation.
Small but Mighty: EV Performance Redefined
The EX30 Cross Country’s compact size masks its formidable capability. With 315 kW of electric power, it balances rugged design with environmentally conscious engineering. Designed to handle both city streets and mountainous terrain, the EX30 proved during the Sani Pass ascent that electric vehicles can deliver precision, control, and endurance once considered exclusive to combustion engines. Steep gradients, hairpin bends, and rocky trails were navigated with composure, showing that adventure and sustainability can coexist seamlessly.

Solar-Powered Sustainability
Adding another layer to this milestone is the installation of South Africa’s highest solar-powered EV charger, positioned just below Sani Pass at 1,566 metres. Installed by CHARGE at Premier Resort Sani Pass, the unit enabled a fully solar-to-solar journey for the EX30 Cross Country, proving that even remote exploration can be powered sustainably. Plans are already in motion to upgrade the charger in Q2 2026 with battery backup capabilities for overnight charging, further enhancing its potential to support eco-conscious adventurers.
“The ascent of Sani Pass by the EX30 Cross Country is a defining moment for electric mobility in South Africa,” said Grant Locke, Managing Director of Volvo Car South Africa. “It demonstrates that electric vehicles can tackle the most challenging terrain, and that clean, sustainable energy can power adventure in even the most remote and rugged locations.”
Bridging History and Innovation
This historic achievement is not just about conquering a mountain; it is about connecting decades of motoring evolution. From mid-20th century Willys Jeep ascents to modern endurance trials, Sani Pass has long been a proving ground for ingenuity and determination. The EX30 Cross Country now joins this legacy, proving that electric power can deliver both capability and sustainability, opening doors to a cleaner, more adventurous future.
Joubert Roux, Founder of CHARGE, adds, “We are proud to have partnered with Volvo and Premier Hotels & Resorts for this milestone. Our solar-powered charger demonstrates that sustainable mobility is achievable even in South Africa’s most remote landscapes, and with planned upgrades, its capabilities will grow even further.”
Redefining Adventure
Volvo’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and exploration continues to challenge perceptions of what electric vehicles can achieve. The EX30 Cross Country is living proof that owning an EV does not limit adventure—it redefines it, allowing drivers to pursue bold journeys without compromising on performance or environmental responsibility.
With the EX30 Cross Country’s Sani Pass ascent, Volvo Car South Africa closes Transport Month with a historic statement: electric mobility is ready for the extremes, and the horizon for sustainable adventure has never been higher.
