South Africa, 30 October 2025 – Volvo Car South Africa (VCSA) has made history, proving that electric vehicles can tackle even the country’s most challenging terrain. The all-electric EX30 Cross Country has become the first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) to successfully ascend Sani Pass, South Africa’s iconic mountain route that winds through the majestic Drakensberg Mountains.
Stretching steep gradients, narrow hairpin bends, and rocky trails, Sani Pass has long tested the limits of vehicle performance and driver skill. It is a route steeped in history: decades before engines roared up its slopes, Basotho shepherds traversed these mountains to trade livestock and goods. In 1969, Volvo marked a milestone when the first of its vehicles climbed the pass, setting a standard for engineering excellence and durability. Now, 56 years later, the EX30 Cross Country completes the same ascent—powered entirely by electricity, underscoring the evolution of automotive technology and sustainable mobility.
Compact Power Meets Rugged Capability
Despite its small footprint, the EX30 Cross Country delivers 315 kW of electric power, blending rugged SUV design with eco-conscious engineering. Its performance on Sani Pass proved that compact EVs are no longer confined to urban streets—they can thrive on the steepest, most challenging routes. The vehicle navigated demanding inclines, rocky terrain, and tight bends with precision and composure, showcasing that adventure and sustainability are no longer mutually exclusive.

Sustainable Exploration at New Heights
Adding further significance to this milestone is South Africa’s highest solar-powered EV charger, installed by CHARGE at Premier Resort Sani Pass, located at 1,566 metres. This installation enabled a fully solar-to-solar journey for the EX30 Cross Country, highlighting how remote exploration can be powered cleanly and sustainably. Plans are already underway to upgrade the charger in Q2 of 2026 with battery backup capabilities, allowing overnight charging and further enhancing the eco-adventure experience.
A Defining Moment for Electric Mobility
“The ascent of Sani Pass by the EX30 Cross Country is a defining moment for electric mobility in South Africa,” said Grant Locke, Managing Director of VCSA. “It demonstrates that EVs can tackle the most demanding terrain, and that sustainable energy can power adventure even in the most remote and rugged locations.”
Locke reflected on the broader significance of the journey: “From early Willys Jeep ascents to modern endurance trials, Sani Pass has always been a stage for ingenuity and determination. The EX30 Cross Country now joins this legacy, bridging decades of motoring history while paving the way for a cleaner, more adventurous future.”
Joubert Roux, Founder of CHARGE, added: “We are proud to have partnered with Volvo and Premier Hotels & Resorts for this momentous occasion. The solar-powered charger at Premier Resort Sani Pass represents the potential of sustainable exploration, and with planned upgrades, it will offer even greater flexibility and convenience for EV adventurers.”
Redefining Adventure
Volvo’s EX30 Cross Country ascent of Sani Pass demonstrates that electric mobility does not limit exploration—it redefines it. By combining cutting-edge technology, sustainable energy, and rugged capability, Volvo continues to expand the possibilities of adventure for South African drivers and beyond, showing that the journey to a cleaner, more innovative future can begin on the steepest slopes.
