Every summer, South Africa’s skies come alive with a flash of turquoise. The European Roller, one of the continent’s most striking migratory birds, completes an awe-inspiring journey of over 15,000 kilometres from Asia, navigating complex flyways to reach Southern Africa. This remarkable voyage, blending endurance and precision, is now being studied in greater detail than ever before, thanks to a new partnership between BirdLife South Africa and Subaru Southern Africa.
A Journey Across Continents
Earlier this year, BirdLife South Africa made a groundbreaking discovery: European Rollers migrate between South Africa and China. One bird, affectionately named Rory, was tracked from Limpopo to Xinjiang province, traversing 13 countries and covering the equivalent of a global odyssey in a single season. This milestone, achieved in collaboration with Professor Ma Ming from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, represents a significant step forward in understanding the global networks of migratory birds.
“Every migration tells a story about connection—about how life moves across the planet,” says Nteo Nkoli, National Marketing Manager at Subaru Southern Africa. “Supporting BirdLife South Africa allows us to be part of something bigger than mobility. The European Roller’s journey is a reminder that travel, whether by wing or wheel, can inspire care for the places we share.”

Fieldwork at the Frontline
From November 2025 to April 2026, BirdLife South Africa’s conservation team will embark on an intensive field research season, using solar-powered satellite tracking units to map the Rollers’ routes and uncover new insights into their behaviour. Key to this initiative is the sixth-generation Subaru Forester, whose capability and versatility make it the ideal companion for reaching remote sites and navigating South Africa’s diverse landscapes.
With class-leading 220 mm ground clearance, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a 136 kW 2.5-litre BOXER engine, and EyeSight Driver Assist Technology as standard, the Forester is engineered to perform in challenging conditions. Its spacious cabin accommodates both researchers and essential equipment, while the 1,174-litre boot (with seats folded) can serve as a mobile field station for notes and tracking preparations.
“The Forester is more than just a vehicle; it’s a platform that enables science in action,” adds Nkoli. “And in a delightful nod to this partnership, one of the new Forester’s hidden Easter eggs features a bird—an homage to the connection between exploration, nature, and discovery.”
Technology, Purpose, and Discovery
The collaboration between BirdLife South Africa and Subaru Southern Africa blends innovation with purpose. Every tracking unit deployed and every remote location reached contributes to a more complete picture of the European Roller’s epic journey. Beyond the technical achievements, the project also underscores the importance of global awareness and environmental stewardship.
As Rory’s flight across continents demonstrated, movement is more than motion—it is a bridge between worlds. With the Forester supporting researchers on the ground, BirdLife South Africa is now poised to unlock more of the European Roller’s story, ensuring that future generations will witness and protect one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles.
