Subaru UK is putting a fresh twist on test drives this February, inviting dog owners to bring their furry companions along for the ride. The initiative coincides with ‘National Walk Your Dog Day’ on 19th February 2026, giving prospective buyers the chance to see if their next car suits both them and their pets.
The move comes after a national survey commissioned by Subaru UK revealed a striking trend: 80% of dog owners consider their pet’s needs when buying a car, yet only 20% have ever tried a vehicle with their dog onboard. The campaign aims to close this gap, providing customers with a practical way to assess how their canine companions fare in the car before making a purchase.
Beyond fun and convenience, the initiative addresses a serious concern: road safety. The survey highlighted that 1 in 5 dog owners are currently breaking the law by failing to secure their pet properly, which can result in fines up to £5,000 and potentially invalidate insurance. A third of those surveyed were unaware of crash-tested dog harnesses, and half did not know that airbags must be deactivated when dogs travel in the front seat. Subaru UK is keen to educate drivers about these legal requirements and best practices, ensuring every journey is safe for humans and pets alike.
During the campaign, Subaru’s dog-friendly retail network will host events where owners can try out models such as the Outback estate, Forester SUV, and Crosstrek with their dogs. Participating retailers will provide guidance on safe dog transport, including tips on crates, dog guards, harnesses, and comfort measures, all in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Of course, a few dog treats will be on hand to keep tails wagging.
Lorraine Bishton, Managing Director of Subaru UK & Ireland, said: “We’re delighted to launch this initiative, encouraging potential customers to experience our cars with a four-legged friend in tow. It’s about empowering people to make more informed car-buying decisions, while also highlighting the critical area of dog transport safety. Our retailers will provide advice, demonstrations, and support to ensure that dogs are safe and comfortable on every journey.”
Subaru UK’s campaign is a unique blend of fun, practicality, and safety. It not only helps dog owners find a car that meets their pet’s needs but also shines a spotlight on the often-overlooked rules around transporting dogs responsibly. With this initiative, Subaru is driving awareness, comfort, and security for pets and owners alike.
