Nissan Ambassador and double Paralympic gold medallist Richard Whitehead MBE has shattered his own Guinness World Record for a double amputee marathon runner at the 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, crossing the finish line in an astonishing 2 hours, 41 minutes, and 36 seconds. This remarkable achievement, which eclipses his previous record set at the TCS London Marathon just six months earlier, is the result of not only Richard’s incredible dedication but also the innovative support of a specially adapted Nissan ARIYA.
In the lead-up to his 80th marathon, Richard embarked on an ambitious quest to push his limits further and improve on his London performance. With the mantra “believe achieve” driving him forward, Richard committed to an intense 90-mile-per-week training regimen. However, he knew that to gain every possible edge, he needed more than just sheer determination—he needed an advanced support system. This is where his long-time partner, Nissan, stepped in, eager to help him optimize his performance in the most technologically advanced way possible.
A Revolutionary Partnership
Nissan, in collaboration with the Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE), custom vehicle specialists Luzzo Bespoke Ltd, and prosthetics pioneer Össur, transformed Richard’s Nissan ARIYA into a cutting-edge marathon training support vehicle. The vehicle modifications represent a perfect fusion of accessibility and innovation, designed specifically to accommodate Richard’s unique training needs.
Key to the project was the development of a bespoke training module, neatly integrated into the boot of Richard’s 100% electric Nissan ARIYA. The system, engineered with precision using CAD data to ensure seamless integration, includes:
- Custom storage for prosthetics and equipment: Designed to store Richard’s Össur running prosthetics, tools, spare clothing, and even a compact coffee machine for pre-run caffeine boosts.
- On-the-go power: The module is equipped with an inverter and plug sockets, allowing Richard to recharge devices, including his phone and smartwatch, essential for monitoring his training data. The system also powers the coffee machine, making sure he stays energized for early morning runs.
- Swing-out seat: A hidden seat in the boot offers Richard a comfortable place to sit when changing his prosthetics, upholstered to match the luxurious blue Nappa leather interior of the ARIYA.
In addition to these practical modifications, the collaboration with Össur extended to integrating Richard’s advanced prosthetics technology with the ARIYA itself. Special quick-release magnetic chargers were installed in the driver’s seat to keep the ‘bionic knees’ of Richard’s walking prosthetics charged while driving. This small but innovative feature not only streamlined his everyday life but also allowed Richard to fully focus on his intensive marathon preparation.

Engineering Innovation and Inclusivity
The project was a passion for the Nissan team, as it provided an opportunity to think outside the box and create meaningful changes that could inspire future advancements in vehicle accessibility. Sarah Dorey from NTCE highlighted the importance of the project: “We’ve loved the challenge of finding ways to support Richard on his epic marathon journey. Our aim is always to make our vehicles more inclusive and accessible, so collaborating with Össur to integrate technology that meets Richard’s unique needs has been inspiring.”
Össur, which has supported Richard with prosthetics since 2004, played a critical role in the project. Hildur Einarsdottir, Executive Vice President of R&D at Össur, praised the collaboration, saying: “We’re incredibly proud to have worked with Nissan and Richard on this groundbreaking project. The customizations demonstrate what’s possible when mobility meets cutting-edge prosthetic technology.”
A New Benchmark in Disability Advocacy and Mobility
For Richard, the enhancements to his ARIYA were more than just technical upgrades—they were crucial contributors to his marathon success. Reflecting on his achievement, he shared, “Setting a new Guinness World Record feels incredible, and I’m grateful to my family and sponsors for their support. The adaptations to my ARIYA helped me get more out of each training session, showing how small innovations can make a big difference.”
Beyond his personal triumph, Richard’s partnership with Nissan has far-reaching implications for the disability community. As a powerful advocate for inclusivity, Richard hopes that this project will inspire more companies to explore how technology can make everyday tasks easier for individuals with disabilities. Nissan, too, remains committed to this goal through its ongoing Possibilities Project, which supports disability inclusion across its operations.
Richard Whitehead’s new Guinness World Record in Chicago is a testament to what can be achieved when human determination and engineering brilliance come together. As he continues to defy ordinary, both on and off the track, his story serves as a reminder that, with the right support and mindset, anything is possible.
