In the rarefied world of automotive icons, few names command the reverence reserved for the Mercedes-Benz SL. From its track-born inception in 1952 to its place in today’s luxury sports car pantheon, the SL has always straddled the line between elegance and engineering excellence. Now, nearly seven decades after the legendary 300 SL debuted on the circuits of Le Mans and Nürburgring, the SL returns with renewed purpose. Developed entirely by Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach, the all-new Mercedes-AMG SL is more than just a new model—it is a rediscovery of soul, seamlessly blending classic roadster aesthetics with cutting-edge performance.
A Design Rooted in Heritage, Reimagined for Today
The new SL doesn’t just pay homage to its lineage—it reincarnates it. With its long bonnet, short overhangs, sculpted rear and the return of the soft top, the proportions are unmistakably SL. The power-domed silhouette, combined with a steeply raked windscreen and deeply contoured wheel arches, conveys a raw dynamism even at a standstill. At the front, the AMG-specific grille with its 14 vertical slats directly references the 300 SL’s unmistakable face, while ultra-slim DIGITAL LIGHT LED headlamps and tapering rear lamps give the car a high-tech edge.
Replacing the outgoing vario roof, the lightweight fabric top contributes to the car’s sportier stance. Weighing 21 kilograms less, it lowers the centre of gravity and further sharpens handling. The elegant Z-fold mechanism allows operation at speeds of up to 60 km/h, taking just 15 seconds to stow or deploy—refined engineering in motion.
A ‘Hyperanalogue’ Interior That Fuses Past and Future
Inside, the new SL’s cabin is an artful blend of heritage and high technology—what Mercedes-AMG calls a “hyperanalogue” philosophy. Inspired by the minimalist interior of the original 300 SL Roadster, the new design offers a driver-centric layout that fuses digital innovation with analogue forms. A freestanding digital instrument cluster set in a sculptural visor gives a nod to classic dials while offering configurable AMG-specific displays.
The standard AMG sports seats are a sculptural highlight, integrating head restraints with the signature AIRSCARF neck-level heating system for ultimate open-air comfort. For the first time, the SL features a 2+2 seating configuration, offering greater everyday usability with rear seats suitable for passengers up to 1.5 metres tall.
Luxury materials, intricate stitching and optional AMG Performance seats round out an interior that delivers on both the tactile expectations of grand touring and the visual drama of high-performance design.
A Chassis Born Anew: Lightweight, Rigid and AMG to the Core
More than a facelift, the latest SL sits atop a completely new architecture developed independently by Mercedes-AMG. Built around a lightweight composite aluminium space frame, the body shell offers outstanding torsional rigidity—up 18% over its predecessor, and with transverse and longitudinal stiffness surpassing even the AMG GT Roadster.
Materials such as magnesium, fibre composites and ultra-high-strength steel are used strategically to balance strength with minimal weight. The result is a structure weighing just 270 kg that sets the stage for razor-sharp dynamics without compromising comfort or safety.

Engineering for the Wind: Active Aerodynamics at its Finest
Every contour of the new SL has been honed not just for aesthetic purity but for aerodynamic excellence. With a drag coefficient of just 0.31, the roadster slices through the air more efficiently than most closed-roof sports cars. Active elements such as the two-piece AIRPANEL system—featuring vertical and horizontal louvres that open on demand—enhance cooling when needed and reduce lift when they’re not.
At the rear, a retractable spoiler with five positions dynamically adjusts based on speed, steering input and driving mode. And beneath the chassis, an optional carbon element deploys at 80 km/h to generate a Venturi effect, improving high-speed stability by effectively “suctioning” the car to the tarmac.
Heart of a Champion: The AMG 4.0-litre V8 Biturbo
The new SL launches with two variants of AMG’s handcrafted 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, assembled under the brand’s “One Man, One Engine” mantra. In the range-topping SL 63 4MATIC+, the engine produces 430 kW (585 hp) and 800 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds en route to a 315 km/h top speed.
To suit the SL’s unique characteristics, AMG engineers have fitted a bespoke oil pan, repositioned intercoolers and revised crankcase ventilation. Air flow and gas exchange have been enhanced, contributing to greater responsiveness, lower emissions and visceral performance in equal measure.
The powerplant is paired with an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission, which swaps the conventional torque converter for a wet start-up clutch, reducing weight and improving throttle response. Shifts are lightning-quick and precisely tuned to match the car’s driving modes and temperament.
Four Wheels of Power: Introducing 4MATIC+ and Rear-Axle Steering
For the first time in SL history, all-wheel drive is standard—specifically, the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ system. It allows seamless distribution of torque between the front and rear axles for maximum traction, especially in dynamic driving or challenging weather conditions.
Complementing this is standard rear-axle steering. Below 100 km/h, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the fronts for improved agility. At higher speeds, they turn in the same direction to enhance stability. Whether threading through city streets or charging down an autobahn, the SL adapts fluidly to its environment.
The Return of a Roadster. The Rise of a New Era.
The new Mercedes-AMG SL is not merely a reinterpretation—it’s a renaissance. It revisits the DNA of a car born on the racetrack and reasserts its place as a pioneer in the era of Performance Luxury. From its evocative silhouette and painstakingly crafted cabin to its awe-inspiring V8 engine and intelligent aero, every facet is a testament to AMG’s engineering prowess.
In the SL, Mercedes-AMG has not only honoured its storied past—it has created a car that feels destined to shape the next chapter of roadster history.
