GWM has dialled up the attitude of its mid-size SUV line-up with the introduction of the Haval H7 Black Edition, a more assertive interpretation of a model that has already found strong footing in South Africa. Since its local debut in January 2025, the H7 has carved out a meaningful presence in a fiercely contested segment, blending performance, technology and value in a way that has resonated with buyers and earned it a finalist position in the 2025 South African Car of the Year Awards.
With the Black Edition, the focus shifts from capability to character. This is the H7 with its collar turned up. The visual changes are deliberate and cohesive, anchored by a blacked-out grille that gives the front end a more imposing stare. Redesigned alloy wheels, black roof rails and darkened exterior details carry the theme across the body, while black mirror caps, window trim and subtle badging complete the transformation. The result is a more purposeful, almost stealthy presence that complements the SUV’s upright proportions without tipping into excess.
Beneath the darker aesthetic, the fundamentals remain reassuringly familiar. The Black Edition retains the same powertrain options as the broader H7 range, offering buyers a choice between a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a hybrid alternative. The turbocharged unit delivers 170 kW and 380 Nm, available in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations, striking a balance between everyday usability and confident performance.
The hybrid derivative takes a different approach, pairing a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with electric assistance to produce a combined 179 kW and a substantial 530 Nm of torque. That torque figure is where the hybrid quietly flexes its muscles, delivering strong low-end response that proves particularly useful when the vehicle is loaded with passengers, towing, or navigating more demanding conditions. It is less about outright speed and more about effortless momentum.
Capability extends beyond the powertrain. For drivers who venture off the beaten path, the H7’s intelligent all-wheel drive system continuously manages traction, distributing torque where it is needed most. A suite of selectable driving modes allows the vehicle to adapt to changing environments, from urban streets to loose sand or muddy trails. Each mode subtly recalibrates throttle response, traction control and torque delivery, creating a more composed and predictable driving experience across varied terrain.
Safety remains a central pillar of the H7 package. A comprehensive array of active safety and driver assistance systems works quietly in the background, supporting the driver without becoming intrusive. Electronic Stability Programme, Brake Assist, Traction Control and Roll Movement Intervention form the foundation, while features such as Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking add an extra layer of awareness. Using a combination of radar and camera systems, the vehicle is able to monitor its surroundings and intervene when necessary, reinforcing confidence behind the wheel.
Inside, the H7 Black Edition continues to balance comfort with technology. The cabin is designed to feel both practical and contemporary, with heated and ventilated front leather seats, a heated multifunction steering wheel and a panoramic sunroof contributing to a more premium atmosphere. Rear seat flexibility enhances usability, while a cooling compartment integrated into the armrest adds a thoughtful touch for longer journeys.
Digital integration sits at the heart of the interior experience. A 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen takes centre stage, supported by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display that keeps key information within the driver’s line of sight. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 50W wireless charging pad and an eight-speaker DTS audio system round out a feature set that feels both modern and intuitive.
Pricing positions the Black Edition competitively within the segment, reinforcing the H7’s value-driven appeal. The 2.0T Luxury 4x2 Black Edition is priced at R604 950, while the 2.0T S-Luxury 4x4 variant comes in at R674 950. The hybrid flagship, the 1.5T HEV S-Luxury 4x2 Black Edition, is listed at R734 950.
Ownership is supported by a comprehensive package that underscores GWM’s confidence in the product. Buyers benefit from a seven-year or 200,000 km warranty and a seven-year or 75,000 km service plan, with service intervals set at 12 months or 15,000 km. Hybrid models receive additional coverage in the form of an eight-year or 150,000 km high-voltage battery warranty, while seven years of roadside assistance adds another layer of reassurance.
The Haval H7 Black Edition does not attempt to reinvent the formula. Instead, it refines it with a sharper visual identity and the same well-rounded mechanical and technological foundation. It is a calculated evolution, one that gives buyers the option to choose not just how their SUV performs, but how it presents itself on the road.
