Martorell, 04-07-2024 – The Martorell plant’s assembly line has undergone a transformation, marked by the introduction of the striking Matrix LED three-triangle eye signature. Adding to the excitement, the exclusive Century Bronze Matt and Enceladus Grey Matt paint options are now gracing the plant, infusing the environment with vibrant new hues. CUPRA’s unwavering commitment to design excellence is now evident as production commences for the new CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon, slated for distribution in the third quarter of 2024. Proudly designed, developed, and manufactured in Martorell, the CUPRA Formentor stands as the brand’s best-seller, with over 347,000 units sold since its 2020 debut. This revamped model has quickly cemented its status as an icon. Witness its production journey in this 40-second video.
The success of the CUPRA Formentor is a testament to the dedication of over 4,000 employees involved in its production. A new car rolls off the line every 69 seconds, in a meticulously managed process that ensures maximum quality through detailed analysis and review. The plant has adopted several innovative tools, including deep learning and advanced digitalized systems, as part of its ongoing transformation. One such innovation is the Prüfer Digital, an automatic station equipped with an artificial vision system that monitors the presence, position, and condition of various vehicle parts. This system performs over 60 simultaneous checks, focusing on both mechanics and wiring.

A crucial component in the production process of the CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon is the Smart Plug system, a technology designed to handle the assembly of more than 90 electronic control units. This system facilitates remote production, enabling the simultaneous startup of control units for up to 45 cars. The standout innovation, however, is the new KTL Oven, the first 100% electric transversal oven in the entire Volkswagen Group. This oven plays a vital role in the paint-drying process, applying an anti-corrosion layer while occupying 42% less space than conventional ovens, thanks to its reduced length. It also achieves up to 25% energy savings.
As the Volkswagen Group’s third largest plant in Europe by volume, the Martorell facility is continually evolving. “We’re working to transform and enhance the factory, integrating the most advanced technologies in its manufacturing and structural processes,” explains Markus Haupt, CUPRA’s Vice-President for Production and Logistics. With the CUPRA Leon and the CUPRA Formentor leading the way, the plant benefits from a significant 3-billion-euro investment, ensuring production becomes more agile, sustainable, and profitable as it moves towards electrification.
