Mazda has reinforced its reputation for engineering excellence with the Mazda CX-80 e-Skyactiv D, recently named Car of the Year and Best Diesel Seven-Seat SUV in Diesel and EcoCar Magazine’s annual Diesel Top 50. The accolade marks a milestone for Mazda, establishing the CX-80 as a formidable contender in the premium European SUV segment.
The CX-80 shares its advanced 3.3-litre in-line six-cylinder e-Skyactiv D diesel engine with the CX-60, which also featured prominently in the awards, finishing seventh overall and securing the title of Best Large Diesel SUV. While the CX-80 is exclusively paired with all-wheel drive and produces 254ps, the CX-60 offers versatility with rear-wheel drive and a 200ps output in Exclusive-Line trim, highlighting Mazda’s ability to cater to diverse driving preferences.
Innovation Under the Bonnet
At the heart of the CX-80’s success lies its award-winning e-Skyactiv D engine, which incorporates Distribution-Controlled Partially Premixed Compression Ignition (DCPCI). This advanced combustion technology ensures high engine efficiency, low emissions, and impressive fuel economy, cementing the CX-80’s credentials as an environmentally responsible SUV.
Complementing the DCPCI system is Mazda’s M Hybrid Boost, a 48V mild-hybrid system that enhances output without compromising efficiency. Together, these technologies deliver a compelling mix of performance and practicality: 254ps at 3,750rpm and 550Nm of torque between 1,500–2,400rpm, enabling effortless towing and confident highway cruising. The combination of hybrid and DCPCI technology also contributes to class-leading driving range, refined responsiveness, and low fuel consumption.
A New Benchmark for Space and Refinement
Commenting on the CX-80’s accolade, Diesel and EcoCar Magazine editor Ian Robertson said:
“Mazda has pulled off something remarkable with the CX-80. Its first entry in the large seven-seat SUV class delivers a new benchmark for space, refinement, and long-distance comfort. Under the bonnet, the creamy six-cylinder engine paired with mild-hybrid and four-wheel drive makes the CX-80 feel muscular yet effortless, whether tackling the open road or urban life. The cabin oozes quality, with finely crafted materials and intuitive controls, and the third row is genuinely spacious for adults—a true family flagship.”
The CX-80 is Mazda’s most spacious SUV ever in Europe, offering a wheelbase extended by 250mm compared to the CX-60, and standing 26mm taller to enhance passenger comfort. Despite its increased dimensions, the SUV retains the familiar, elegant profile of its smaller sibling, ensuring brand continuity while elevating presence on the road.
Inside, Mazda offers unmatched versatility with multiple seating configurations. The CX-80 comes standard with a seven-seat layout, while customers can choose two six-seat arrangements featuring either captain’s chairs with a walk-through space or with a fixed centre console. Five high-spec UK grades—Exclusive-Line, Homura, Takumi, Homura Plus, and Takumi Plus—allow buyers to tailor the SUV’s equipment and seating arrangements to their exact requirements.
Style Meets Substance
The CX-80 also debuts two new paint colours in the UK market: Artisan Red and Melting Copper. Artisan Red, developed with Mazda’s Takuminuri painting technique, offers a deeper, more refined tone than the iconic Soul Red Crystal, while Melting Copper evokes the warmth and texture of lightly sandblasted copper. Alongside seven other available shades, Mazda ensures the CX-80 can be personalised to suit a wide range of tastes.

Recognition Across the Board
The CX-60’s performance was equally celebrated. Robertson noted:
“Mazda’s push into the premium sector continues with the CX-60, which impressed us again this year. Its straight-six e-Skyactiv D engine blends brawn with refinement, and whether in 200ps rear-wheel drive or 254ps all-wheel drive, it delivers smooth, confident progress. Inside, the CX-60 is one of the best-built SUVs we’ve tested, offering simple ergonomics and stunning materials—truly a driver’s choice in a class often dominated by badge snobbery.”
Mazda UK Managing Director Jeremy Thomson added:
“The CX-80 is our flagship SUV, combining space, practicality, luxury, and standout design. It blends progressive Japanese aesthetics with superior accommodation, quality, and technology, all while delivering the signature driving experience that defines Mazda. Winning Diesel Car Magazine’s Car of the Year confirms that the CX-80 is challenging established premium brands in the UK SUV market.”
In addition to its Diesel Car Magazine accolades, the CX-80 also secured second place in the Caravan and Motorhome Club 2025 Towcar of the Year Awards, further underlining its versatility, towing capability, and appeal to discerning families.
