BYD, the world’s leading manufacturer of new-energy vehicles (NEVs), has officially entered the Romanian market, marking another major step in its strategic European expansion. With a comprehensive line-up that includes cutting-edge electric and plug-in hybrid models, BYD is offering Romanian consumers a future-facing alternative to conventional mobility—backed by an ambitious plan to open over 30 dealerships across the country by the end of 2025.
Diverse Line-Up Tailored for Romanian Roads
In its initial roll-out, BYD is introducing four distinct models designed to meet a wide spectrum of customer needs. At the forefront is the SEALION 7, a high-performance, all-electric SUV that embodies BYD’s commitment to innovation. Capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds and offering up to 502 km of range, the SEALION 7 is powered by the revolutionary Blade Battery and built using BYD’s advanced Cell-to-Body (CTB) construction. This method integrates the battery into the body structure itself, improving rigidity and crash safety while reducing vehicle weight.
Joining it is the SEAL, a sleek and efficient electric sedan that delivers up to 570 km of WLTP range and shares the same advanced powertrain and CTB construction. With its aerodynamic profile and refined ride, the SEAL is perfectly suited for urban commutes and long-distance travel alike.
Completing the electric side of the range is the ATTO 2, a compact SUV designed for practicality and affordability. Despite its smaller footprint, the ATTO 2 doesn’t compromise on innovation, featuring the same Blade Battery and CTB technology as its more performance-oriented siblings.
For drivers who require even greater flexibility, BYD is also launching the SEAL U DM-i, a plug-in hybrid SUV that seamlessly blends electric performance with the long-distance confidence of a petrol engine. Thanks to BYD’s proprietary Super DM hybrid system, the SEAL U DM-i can cover more than 1,000 km on a single charge and full tank, making it an ideal solution for family road trips or professional use.

Fast-Tracking Retail Expansion
Romanian consumers will initially find BYD’s vehicles at two Bucharest dealerships, operated in partnership with Tiriac Auto and DAB Auto. But this is just the beginning. BYD plans to expand rapidly, opening more than 30 dealerships across major Romanian cities by the end of 2025—including Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Iasi, Brasov, Constanta, Ploiesti, Pitesti and Craiova. This aggressive retail strategy underscores BYD’s commitment to becoming a key player in the Romanian automotive landscape.
A Technological Powerhouse
Founded in 1995, BYD is unique in the NEV sector as the only manufacturer to independently produce its entire ecosystem of core technologies—including power systems, electric motors, batteries, semiconductors and controllers. This vertical integration has not only driven BYD’s innovation but also its growth: in November 2023, BYD became the world’s first carmaker to manufacture 10 million new-energy vehicles.
The Blade Battery, launched in 2020, remains a hallmark of BYD’s engineering prowess. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, the Blade Battery uses a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry that is cobalt-free, longer lasting, and safer. It has passed some of the industry’s most rigorous safety tests—including a nail penetration test that simulates extreme physical trauma—with no signs of thermal runaway, smoke, or fire.
Vision for a Greener Future
“At BYD, our mission is to make our sustainable technologies accessible to as many consumers as possible,” said Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD. “Every new market in Europe is incredibly important to us, and we’re delighted to launch in Romania with a diverse portfolio that covers everything from high-performance electric SUVs to long-range hybrids. We’re looking forward to growing our presence here throughout 2025 and beyond.”
With over 110,000 engineers, more than 30 global industrial parks, and a footprint that now spans 96 countries and 400 cities, BYD’s expansion into Romania is another milestone in a broader mission to reduce global dependence on fossil fuels. As the world’s first automaker to cease production of internal combustion engine vehicles in favour of EVs, BYD is not just bringing new models to market—it’s reshaping the future of mobility, one country at a time.
