As Volvo continues to lead the charge in automotive innovation, the brand is rolling out two groundbreaking tech upgrades across its most popular models. The 2026 model year will see the introduction of an enhanced user experience and a significantly upgraded infotainment system, both designed to keep Volvo cars ahead of the curve. Additionally, Volvo is embracing the future of seamless charging with the introduction of Plug & Charge for select models in Europe. These updates, which will roll out across the XC40, EX40, EC40, V60, and V90 lineups, promise to offer a faster, safer, and more personalized driving experience.
Volvo Car UX: A More Intuitive and Personal Experience
At the heart of these upgrades is the new-generation Volvo Car UX, a user interface designed to be safe, focused, and personal. This next-gen system is not only intuitive but also built on real-world data and customer feedback to ensure that it meets the diverse needs of Volvo’s global customer base. First seen in the EX30, EX90, and new XC90, this new interface brings simplicity to what might otherwise be complex interactions, making every drive more enjoyable and less distracting.
The Volvo Car UX introduces a home screen that can be customized with the apps and features you use most frequently, such as navigation, media, and phone connectivity, making them easily accessible at a glance. The contextual bar is another new feature, adjusting its content based on your current needs and displaying the most recently used apps, so you never have to fumble through menus while driving. The driver display, located just behind the steering wheel, has also been redesigned for clarity, with a larger, clearer navigation view to enhance usability.
This upgrade will be available across all 2026 models mentioned, as well as a simple over-the-air software update for millions of Volvo vehicles equipped with Google built-in. By the end of 2025, approximately 2.5 million Volvo customers globally will receive this update, ensuring that their cars remain at the forefront of automotive technology, regardless of their model’s year of manufacture.
Erik Severinson, Volvo Cars’ Chief Product and Strategy Officer, shared, “By introducing our new-generation Volvo Car UX across our lineup, we’re working toward the aim that every Volvo model – regardless of platform and powertrain – should offer a similar user experience, providing our customers with more choices.”
Snapdragon® Cockpit Platform: A Faster, More Responsive Infotainment System
The other key upgrade making its way into Volvo’s 2026 lineup is the Snapdragon® Cockpit Platform, developed by Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. This next-gen platform, already featured in the EX90 and EX30 models, will power an infotainment system that is more than twice as fast as the previous iteration, offering up to 10 times faster graphics rendering.
The upgrade significantly improves responsiveness, reducing lag and ensuring that essential information is delivered to the driver right when it’s needed. With the new system, everything from navigation to media controls will feel seamless and immediate, helping reduce driver distraction and allowing for a safer driving experience.
“Anders Bell, Volvo Cars’ Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, explained, “This boost creates a lag-free infotainment system that displays the right information at the right time – essentially helping us to decrease driver distraction and help you be a safer driver.” The Snapdragon® platform will also be incorporated into the new XC90 SUV, set for release this year.

Simplifying the Charging Experience with Plug & Charge
For drivers of the EX30, EX40, and EC40 models in Europe, another exciting upgrade will be the addition of Plug & Charge. This feature simplifies the public charging process by eliminating the need for additional authentication steps or physical cards. When drivers pull up to a compatible charging station, the system automatically recognizes the car and its associated payment method, allowing for a seamless charging experience.
Erik Severinson emphasized, “With Plug & Charge, you just drive up to a compatible charging station, hop out, plug in and go about your day. When you’re back, it’s the same carefree approach – everything is already sorted by the system.”
Finding compatible charging stations is made easy using Google Maps, integrated into the car’s central display, or through the Volvo Cars app. Once the car is plugged in, the charging process begins automatically, and the system handles all billing in the background, providing a stress-free experience for drivers.
The UK-specific product offering for Plug & Charge will be confirmed at a later date, but it promises to make owning an electric Volvo even more convenient.
A Vision for the Future
These upgrades reflect Volvo’s commitment to delivering premium, personalized, and safe driving experiences. With a focus on over-the-air software updates and continuous improvements, Volvo is working toward a future where cars are smarter, more connected, and more responsive to the needs of drivers.
As Severinson concluded, “This roll-out is in line with our strategy to make our cars better over time with over-the-air software updates and goes hand in hand with our ambition to keep investing in our entire car lineup.”
With the introduction of the new Volvo Car UX and Snapdragon® Cockpit Platform, as well as the seamless charging experience offered by Plug & Charge, the 2026 Volvo models are set to elevate the driving experience in ways that are not just faster and more convenient, but safer and more connected than ever before.
The Small Print
The factory upgrades will be available on the 2026 model year versions of the XC40, EX40, EC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, V90, and V90 Cross Country models. The Snapdragon chip will also be featured in the new XC90. Availability and timing will vary by market, with more information on additional 2026 model year updates coming soon.
