Volvo Cars has once again proven why it remains synonymous with automotive safety. The brand’s latest breakthrough — the world’s first multi-adaptive safety belt — has been named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025, an accolade that celebrates 300 innovations shaping the future of human progress.
Set to make its debut in the upcoming Volvo EX60, a fully electric SUV to be revealed in January 2026, this next-generation safety system represents a fundamental leap forward in intelligent occupant protection. It’s not just about restraint anymore — it’s about understanding.
“We are proud to be recognised by TIME as a leader in automotive safety,” says Åsa Haglund, Head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “With the multi-adaptive safety belt in the upcoming EX60, we’re leveraging real-time data to adapt to the situation and the person wearing it – providing smarter, personalised protection that can help reduce injury.”
Smarter Safety, Personalised Protection
Using real-time data gathered from both interior and exterior vehicle sensors, the new system intelligently adjusts how the seatbelt responds to different conditions. It takes into account traffic situations, crash severity, and the unique physical profile of each occupant — including their height, weight, body shape and seating position.
In practice, this means that a larger driver involved in a high-impact collision will receive a higher belt load setting to minimise head injury risk, while a smaller passenger in a lighter impact will experience a softer belt load to reduce the chance of rib injuries. The result is a more personalised safety response that adapts in milliseconds to optimise protection.
Evolving Through Data and Over-the-Air Updates
In true Volvo fashion, innovation doesn’t stop at launch. The multi-adaptive safety belt has been engineered to continuously improve through over-the-air (OTA) software updates, ensuring the EX60 remains at the forefront of occupant safety. As Volvo gathers more real-world data, the system will refine its algorithms — deepening its understanding of new driving scenarios and further personalising protection.
This data-driven evolution underscores Volvo Cars’ commitment to lifelong safety innovation, rooted in real-world insight and human-centric design.

A Legacy of Leadership in Safety
This marks the second consecutive year that Volvo Cars has earned a place on TIME’s prestigious list. In 2024, the magazine recognised Volvo’s Driver Understanding System, a pioneering technology introduced in the EX90 and ES90 models. That system uses advanced sensing to detect signs of distraction, fatigue or impairment — enabling the car to intervene and assist when needed.
Together, these technologies highlight Volvo’s holistic approach to safety: not just reacting to danger, but anticipating and preventing it through advanced intelligence and continuous learning.
Looking Ahead: The EX60 Reveal
The world will see the full capabilities of the Volvo EX60 — and the debut of this groundbreaking seatbelt — during a livestreamed global reveal from Stockholm, Sweden, on 21 January 2026.
With its latest innovation earning global recognition even before the car’s unveiling, Volvo Cars continues to redefine what safety means in an age where vehicles are as intelligent as they are protective.
