Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has demonstrated remarkable resilience and market leadership in the automotive sector, with a notable market share of 24.7% for September 2024. The company reported total sales of 10,890 vehicles for the month, contributing to an impressive year-to-date figure of 93,244 units sold across all brands, including Lexus and Hino. This performance solidifies TSAM’s position as the leading manufacturer in both the passenger and light commercial vehicle (LCV) segments.
Stellar Performance in Light Commercial Vehicles
The Hilux continues to reign supreme in the local market, registering an impressive 2,942 units sold in September. This strong performance, alongside robust sales from the Hiace (386 units) and Land Cruiser pickup (168 units), helped Toyota achieve a leading total of 3,695 LCVs sold. Such figures underscore Toyota’s deep-rooted popularity and trust among South African consumers, particularly in the utility vehicle sector.
Passenger Vehicle Sales Surge
In the passenger vehicle segment, Toyota reported 6,868 units sold, further highlighting its dominance in this competitive market. Key contributors to this success included locally manufactured models such as the Corolla Cross, which achieved sales of 2,046 units, and the Fortuner with 1,086 units sold. Other models, including the Vitz (814 units), Starlet Cross (713 units), and Starlet (626 units), also played significant roles in reinforcing Toyota’s leadership in the passenger car market.

Lexus and Hino Contributions
On the luxury front, Lexus has also made its mark, with a total of 54 units sold, including 21 NX models and 12 units each of the RX and LX. Meanwhile, Hino trucks maintained a steady performance with 293 units sold, split evenly between the 500 Series and 300 Series, each accounting for 117 units.
Parts Supply and Economic Context
In addition to vehicle sales, TSAM’s Parts Warehouse contributed to the overall success by supplying over 1.7 million parts, with approximately 300,000 pieces designated for the export market.
The broader context of the automotive market reveals some challenges. According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (naamsa), total new vehicle sales reached 401,169 units by September 2024, reflecting a 5.8% decline compared to the previous year. However, the new passenger car market exhibited a slight improvement, with 30,218 units sold in September 2024, an increase of 2% over the same month in 2023.
Positive Economic Outlook
Looking ahead, the economic landscape appears to be improving. The South African Reserve Bank made a historic interest rate cut for the first time in four years this September, contributing to a stronger Rand and a decrease in inflation below the central bank’s target. These economic indicators have the potential to enhance consumer confidence and spur further growth in vehicle sales.
Leon Theron, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at TSAM, expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Decreased fuel prices are likely to boost consumer confidence and lighten household budgets. These positive spins are attributable to a robust currency and declining inflation. We’d like to thank our loyal customers for their unwavering support and we see them as ambassadors of our Toyota, Lexus, and Hino brands.”
Theron further highlighted the strength of TSAM’s dealer network, emphasizing the pivotal role it plays in maintaining the company’s leading position month after month.
As TSAM celebrates its September sales figures, the outlook for the remainder of 2024 remains positive. With a combination of strong sales performance, robust economic indicators, and a dedicated dealer network, Toyota South Africa is well-positioned to continue its leadership in the automotive market and respond effectively to the evolving needs of consumers.
