Suzuki Auto South Africa has every reason to celebrate this November. Fresh from its local media launch, the all-new fourth-generation Suzuki Swift has clinched the 2025 RJC Car of the Year award in Japan, marking the fourth time this compact hatchback has earned the prestigious accolade since its debut two decades ago.
The RJC (Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan) Car of the Year award underscores Suzuki’s continued excellence in the highly competitive B-segment. First launched in 2004, the Swift has proven its global appeal, with an impressive 9.54 million units sold worldwide, including the Dzire sedan variants.
Judging Excellence Across Key Categories
The 2025 RJC Car of the Year was awarded after rigorous evaluation by a panel of 40 experts comprising automotive researchers and journalists. These specialists assessed Japanese vehicles launched between 1st November 2023 and 31st October 2024, ultimately shortlisting six finalists before announcing the winner on 12th November 2024.
Suzuki’s fourth-generation Swift stood out for its well-rounded attributes, which earned high praise from the jury. Its stylish exterior, innovative 1.2-litre three-cylinder powertrain, and refined driving dynamics—enhanced by recalibrated suspension and Suzuki’s lightweight yet rigid ‘HEARTECT’ platform—were particularly lauded.
Safety was another standout feature, with the new Swift offering six airbags, ESP, ABS, EBD, BAS, and ISOFIX child-seat anchors as standard. Together, these elements cement the Swift’s reputation as a budget-friendly, performance-driven vehicle that doesn’t compromise on safety or style.
South Africa Anticipates a Strong Performance
On local soil, Suzuki Auto South Africa is eager to see how the Swift fares in the 2025 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards. Dubbed the country’s most authoritative motoring awards programme, this annual event recognises top vehicles across 13 segments of the new-car market.
The fourth-generation Swift 1.2 GLX has already made its mark, securing a spot as one of three finalists in the Best Budget Car (under R300k) category. Winners will be revealed in February 2025, and Suzuki is optimistic about extending the Swift’s winning streak.
Shaking Up the B-Segment
Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager for Suzuki Auto South Africa, expressed his enthusiasm for the Swift’s continued success:
“The fourth-generation Swift is shaking things up in the hotly contested B-segment. Its recent victory in the 2025 RJC Car of the Year competition bears testament to this fact, and we can’t wait to see how the new Swift performs at the 2025 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards. Hopefully, our local judges are similarly impressed with what it offers.”
Global Legacy Meets Local Promise
With a legacy built on design innovation, advanced engineering, and outstanding value, the Suzuki Swift’s latest triumph in Japan reaffirms its position as a global icon in the B-segment hatchback category.
As it gears up to compete for honours on South African soil, the Swift continues to set benchmarks both internationally and locally. Whether it’s conquering the RJC stage or impressing Cars.co.za judges, the fourth-generation Suzuki Swift is redefining expectations—one accolade at a time.
