Suzuki Auto South Africa is once again gearing up for one of the country’s most celebrated motorsport spectacles, the 16th annual Simola Hillclimb in Knysna, taking place from 30 April to 3 May 2026. With its blend of precision driving, high drama, and an unmistakable festival atmosphere, the event continues to serve as a proving ground where ambition matters just as much as outright horsepower.
This year, Suzuki returns not only as a competitor but as a Tier One OEM sponsor, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to the event. The brand will once again take ownership of Zones 4 and 8, with the latter famously known among drivers and fans as the Suzuki Esses, a section that rewards rhythm, bravery and clean execution.
For Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager at Suzuki Auto South Africa, the partnership reflects something deeper than branding alone. It speaks to accessibility in motorsport, where passion can matter more than price tags or engineering extremes. The Simola Hillclimb, he notes, remains one of the standout fixtures on the local calendar precisely because it opens the gates to a broad spectrum of machines and personalities, from bespoke performance builds to everyday heroes pushed to their limits.
That philosophy comes to life in Suzuki’s 2026 competitive line-up, which once again strips away imbalance by placing four identical Swift 1.2 GL+ manual hatchbacks on the starting line. Each car weighs just 917kg and is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 60kW and 112Nm. On paper, the figures are modest, but the lightweight chassis and responsive nature of the fourth-generation Swift transform it into something far more spirited when the road begins to climb.
Built on Suzuki’s rigid HEARTECT platform and fitted with recalibrated suspension, the Swift offers drivers the confidence to attack corners with surprising composure. In a discipline where momentum is everything, that balance of agility and predictability becomes its own kind of advantage.
Among the four drivers taking on the challenge is Top Gear South Africa’s Avon Middleton, who sees the Swift’s underdog status as part of its appeal. For him, the Hillclimb has always been about proving what is possible when courage meets opportunity, and Suzuki’s entry captures that spirit in its purest form.
Joining him is Girlie Lukhele, known for her presence in the sim racing and digital motorsport space. For Lukhele, the transition from virtual racing lines to the physical demands of Simola represents an entirely new frontier, one she approaches with enthusiasm and a touch of anticipation for the unknown.
Ignition TV presenter Ziphorah Masethe will also swap the sidelines for the driver’s seat, stepping into the Hillclimb after years of covering the action as a spectator. Having experienced the energy of the event from the stands, she now joins it from within, bringing a familiar sense of character to a car that mirrors her own lively personality.
Rounding out the quartet is Instagram content creator Samuel de Fonseca, founder of TheCarScene. Long accustomed to capturing the event through a lens, he now finds himself at the centre of it, ready to translate the raw emotion of the climb into real-time storytelling from behind the wheel.
Two wheels will also play their part in Suzuki’s presence this year, with multiple championship drag racer and Suzuki Richards Bay Dealer Principal Jaco Viviers set to showcase the special-edition Hayabusa Ultimate Sportbike. Known for its performance heritage and unmistakable presence, the Hayabusa will feature in a series of demonstration runs designed to bring an added layer of spectacle to the Hill.
Viviers will also join the Swift drivers in the popular King of the Hill Parade at the Knysna Waterfront, a highlight that traditionally sets the tone for the main event. It is here that machines and personalities come together in a more relaxed but no less passionate display of motorsport culture.
As Carpenter sums it up, this year’s return is about more than competition alone. It is about energy, community and the shared thrill of pushing boundaries, whether on four wheels or two. With the Swift squad ready to take on the climb and the Hayabusa preparing to stretch its legs, Suzuki’s presence at Simola 2026 promises a familiar blend of fun, accessibility and full-throttle entertainment.
