For more than six decades, the SACSA Easter Tournament has stood as one of South Africa’s most enduring community sporting events, evolving from a modest gathering into a vibrant celebration of sport, culture and connection. What began over 65 years ago as a way to bring together the Chinese community has since expanded into a multi-sport showcase that unites diverse Asian communities across the country, anchored by a shared passion for competition and camaraderie.
From its early days of soccer, table tennis and basketball, the tournament has grown in both scale and ambition. Today, it includes volleyball, badminton, golf and, more recently, padel, reflecting both changing sporting trends and a willingness to embrace new opportunities for participation. This steady evolution has allowed the event to remain relevant while preserving its core purpose of fostering unity through sport.
The opening ceremony this year carried a strong sense of occasion, with dignitaries and community leaders in attendance. Ambassador Wu of the People’s Republic of China in South Africa delivered a keynote address that underscored the importance of sportsmanship and cultural exchange. His remarks highlighted the role of events like the SACSA Easter Tournament in strengthening ties between communities and contributing positively to South Africa’s broader social fabric.
This year’s tournament once again demonstrated the strength of community engagement, with players and supporters gathering for three days of inclusive yet competitive action. The atmosphere reflected not only the competitive spirit of the participants, but also the deeper connections that have been built over generations.
A notable addition to the tournament’s recent growth has been the rise of padel. Introduced in 2024, the sport has quickly gained traction, with participation more than doubling in just two years. This year’s competition featured over 130 players competing across multiple formats, signalling both the rapid rise of padel in South Africa and its strong appeal within the SACSA community.
The introduction of a Ladies Division marked an important step in expanding participation. Ming Guo and Niki Howson claimed the Cup in the inaugural division, while Grace Huang and Angela Huang secured second place with the Plate. In the Open Division, 52 teams competed across Intermediate and Advanced categories, with Jesse Yeun and Julian Sam winning the Intermediate Cup, and Tony Guo and Bill Guo taking top honours in the Advanced division. The Team Unity Cup added a collaborative dimension, encouraging new partnerships and culminating in a final between Team Moutai and Team Live Laugh Lob, with Team Moutai emerging victorious.
Supporting this year’s tournament was LDV South Africa, a brand with a 130-year global legacy now operating under SAIC Motor in China. As the Official Padel Apparel Partner, LDV’s involvement extended beyond traditional sponsorship. Branded tournament shirts worn by all players ensured consistent visibility while reinforcing a sense of shared identity among participants.
“We’re proud to support the SACSA Padel Tournament, bringing players and communities together for a weekend of sport, fun and connection,” said Gerhard Moolman, CEO of LDV South Africa.
Since its launch in South Africa in May 2024, LDV has been steadily building its presence in the local market. With an expanding dealer network, new model introductions and a growing leadership team, the brand is positioning itself as a key player in both the commercial and family vehicle segments. Its partnership with the SACSA Easter Tournament reflects a broader commitment to supporting community-driven initiatives that align with its values.
As the tournament continues to grow, it remains a powerful example of how sport can bridge cultures, generations and communities. The addition of new disciplines like padel ensures its continued relevance, while its longstanding traditions preserve the spirit that has defined it for more than 65 years.
