DTSA Group of Companies, in collaboration with Sandown Motors Commercial Vehicles Centurion and the Gift of the Givers Foundation, has completed a meaningful education-focused community investment at Sinethemba High School in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, reinforcing its long-term commitment to uplifting learning environments in regions closely tied to its operations.
The initiative forms part of a broader corporate social responsibility drive that places education at the centre of sustainable development and opportunity creation in South Africa. For DTSA, the Eastern Cape carries particular significance as it is home to its assembly plant and a large portion of its workforce, giving the intervention a deeply rooted sense of shared community responsibility.
The project traces its origins back to DTSA’s 2024 Mandela Day outreach in partnership with the Gift of the Givers Foundation. During that initial visit, the realities faced by Sinethemba High School became clear, with infrastructure and resource constraints limiting the learning experience for both educators and learners. What began as a single day of engagement evolved into a sustained commitment to return with tangible support. That commitment gained further momentum when Sandown Motors Commercial Vehicles Centurion joined the effort, enabling a broader and more impactful intervention.
Sinethemba High School, a public institution serving its community with resilience and determination, now benefits from a series of targeted upgrades designed to strengthen both traditional and digital learning. Classrooms have been renovated to create more conducive teaching spaces, while the school’s library has been improved to better support literacy and academic development. In addition, computers were donated to establish and enhance a functioning computer lab, giving learners access to essential digital tools that are increasingly vital in modern education.
The intervention reflects a shared belief among the partners that education remains one of the most powerful levers for long-term social and economic transformation. Across South Africa, many schools continue to face resource limitations that affect learning outcomes, making collaborative private sector involvement an important complement to public efforts.
DTSA Group of Companies President and Group CEO Maretha Gerber emphasised the emotional and strategic importance of the project, noting that education forms a core pillar of the organisation’s CSR philosophy. She highlighted the significance of investing in a community that is both operationally relevant and personally connected to many employees, describing the initiative as part of a broader mission to help ensure that every learner has a fair opportunity to succeed.
Sandown Commercial Vehicles Centurion CEO Mark Croxon echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in contributing to a project that aligns naturally with the company’s footprint in the region. With vehicles assembled in the Eastern Cape and playing a role in keeping African economies moving, the partnership reflects a full-circle commitment to supporting the communities that underpin its operations.
The Gift of the Givers Foundation played a pivotal role in ensuring the successful implementation of the project. As one of Africa’s largest humanitarian organisations, it provided coordination and support that helped ensure the intervention was both effective and sustainable, reinforcing the value of cross-sector collaboration in community development efforts.
DTSA has also indicated that this engagement is not a once-off intervention, with intentions to return to Sinethemba High School in the future to further build on the progress already made. The long-term vision is to continue strengthening the school’s environment so that learners and educators are increasingly equipped, supported and inspired to shape their futures with confidence.
