A special-order 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL, originally bearing the distinguished ‘7 SM’ registration, is set to return to the open market. This illustrious vehicle, once owned by the legendary Sir Stirling Moss OBE, will be auctioned by H&H Classics at their Duxford sale on June 19th, with an estimated value of £10,000 to £12,000.
This R129-model SL, finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic with Grey leather upholstery, symbolizes the enduring bond between Sir Stirling Moss and Mercedes-Benz. Moss famously clinched victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia, driving a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR, solidifying his legacy in the racing world.
“Sir Stirling Moss is often regarded as the greatest Formula One driver never to have won a world championship, and we are honoured to offer one of his personal cars,” remarked James McWilliam, Senior Specialist at H&H Classics. “A car associated with such a racing icon is sure to attract significant interest, and this 500SL is no exception.”
Custom-ordered to Sir Stirling’s specifications, he took delivery of the SL in Bremen, Germany, following its pre-delivery inspection on July 24, 1992. The car was subsequently UK-registered with the renowned ‘7 SM’ plate in August of that year.

Four years later, the vehicle changed hands, sold through Graypaul Ferrari at 25,602 miles, and eventually came into the possession of the current owner, its fourth, in February 2006. Under the current owner’s stewardship, the cylinder heads have been overhauled and other maintenance tasks have been meticulously performed.
Presenting beautifully both externally and internally, and showing just 89,900 miles, the car boasts 12 main dealer and three specialist service stamps in its service book. It also includes a letter confirming Moss’s four-year ownership. Accompanying the vehicle are the original owner’s wallet, handbook, and service book.
“In addition to being an exceptional motor car in its own right, the car’s provenance is beyond dispute, thanks to the ownership confirmation letter and a comprehensive history file that verifies its careful maintenance over the years,” added McWilliam. “This remarkable combination ensures significant interest in this unique piece of Sir Stirling’s history.”
Prospective buyers can view the car in person at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, from midday on Tuesday, June 18th. Bidding can be done in person, online, via telephone, or by leaving a commission bid when it goes up for auction the following day.
