Geely Auto South Africa is accelerating its push into the country’s evolving new-energy vehicle landscape, widening its portfolio with a carefully structured mix of electric and hybrid models designed to meet the realities of diverse driving needs. As affordability, range confidence and charging accessibility continue to shape consumer decisions, the brand’s latest lineup signals a deliberate strategy: offer multiple pathways into electrified mobility without forcing a one-size-fits-all solution.
At the centre of this expansion is a clear philosophy of choice and practicality. According to Jateen Daya, Head of Product for Geely Auto South Africa, local motorists require flexibility that reflects how, where and why they drive. Some need compact urban efficiency, others demand long-distance capability, while many still want the reassurance of hybrid flexibility. This is where Geely’s layered product approach becomes particularly relevant, combining full battery-electric vehicles with plug-in hybrid technology and traditional combustion options under one evolving ecosystem.
The Geely E2 sits at the entry point of this strategy, offering accessible electric mobility tailored for urban environments. Compact yet well-equipped, it delivers 85 kW of power and 150 Nm of torque through a rear-wheel-drive layout, a configuration that adds a more engaging driving character than many typical front-driven city EVs. With a 39.4 kWh LFP battery, it achieves up to 325 km of WLTP range while maintaining efficient energy consumption of 15.2 kWh per 100 km. Practicality is reinforced through fast DC charging that takes the battery from 30 to 80 percent in roughly 25 minutes, alongside a spacious 375-litre boot and additional front storage. Inside, a 14.6-inch infotainment display and Flyme Auto Smart System position the E2 firmly within the modern connected-car experience, supported by advanced driver assistance features and a multi-link rear suspension setup that enhances ride quality.
Moving up the range, the Geely E5 represents the brand’s all-round electric SUV offering, built on Geely’s GEA architecture. It delivers a more powerful 160 kW and 320 Nm, with a WLTP range of up to 450 km depending on specification. The introduction of the Apex Plus variant adds a larger 68.39 kWh battery, extending long-distance capability for drivers who prioritise fewer charging stops on extended journeys. With rapid DC charging capability that restores the battery from 30 to 80 percent in approximately 20 minutes, the E5 is designed to reduce downtime while maintaining strong performance credentials, including a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in as little as 6.9 seconds.
Safety and technology remain defining elements of the E5, which carries dual five-star Euro NCAP and ANCAP ratings. Its 11-in-1 integrated electric drive system and intelligent cockpit layout highlight Geely’s focus on efficiency and user experience, while features such as Vehicle-to-Load and Vehicle-to-Vehicle capability add practical versatility. A large 15.4-inch touchscreen and premium audio system in higher trims reinforce its positioning as a tech-forward family SUV with genuine everyday usability.
Completing the trio is the Geely E5 EM-i, a plug-in hybrid designed for drivers seeking flexibility without compromise. It pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a powerful electric motor, producing a combined 160 kW and 262 Nm from the electric drive system. Its standout feature is its combined driving range of up to 1002 km, allowing long-distance travel with minimal range anxiety while still enabling electric-only commuting for shorter trips. Fuel consumption is rated at just 4.3 litres per 100 km, underscoring its efficiency-focused design.
The EM-i system introduces multiple driving modes, allowing the vehicle to operate in pure electric, hybrid or power-focused configurations depending on demand. Fast charging support, a 18.4 kWh LFP battery and a refined Flyme operating system contribute to a seamless transition between power sources, while its infotainment and premium interior finishes position it as a sophisticated alternative in the hybrid segment.
Across the lineup, Geely Auto South Africa is also strengthening its value proposition through charging support packages, including complimentary wallbox and emergency chargers, alongside charging vouchers or cards depending on financing options. These additions are designed to lower the barrier to entry and improve the ownership experience in a market where home charging infrastructure is still developing.
Together, the E2, E5 and E5 EM-i reflect a broader transformation in South Africa’s automotive landscape, where electrification is no longer a singular path but a spectrum of solutions. By offering compact EVs, long-range electric SUVs and efficient plug-in hybrids side by side, Geely is positioning itself not just as an EV brand, but as a full-spectrum mobility provider ready for the country’s diverse driving realities.
