The inaugural Fiat School Games was held at the newly completed Fiat Sport Centre in Soweto [Zone 10 Meadowlands] on Saturday the 10th of June 2006.
The school games held in conjunction with the Joburg City Council Sports and Recreational Department were attended by twelve local schools and two invitational schools from Alexandra and Limpopo.
Over 1200 participants competed in the school games. The games consisted of the following sporting codes: – Soccer; Volleyball; Basketball; Netball and Athletics events for both track and field disciplines.
The 13 schools competed for over 400 medals and 20 trophies in the various disciplines. Each participant received a certificate confirming their participation.
Over 3600 meals were served during the course of the day and 200 VIP guests were treated to a sit down luncheon.
The days’ proceedings commenced at 08H00 with an opening ceremony which included the singing of the South African National Anthem and the Italian National Anthem. The final prize giving and awards ceremony continued late into a pleasant winter evening.
Apart from the participating schools, the games were supported by the local community adding to the festivities of the day. Fiat Auto South Africa would like to thank the many sponsors that contributed to the Fiat Sport Centre and to the days’ events.
