Innovative mini-MPV is big on style and practicality
Using its small-car expertise, Suzuki has created a compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that blends the traditional elements of compactness, comfort and economy with the aerodynamics, handling and dynamic design demanded by modern buyers.
The Suzuki Splash, which is shown at the Johannesburg International Motor Show for the first time, is being considered for South African release. It is a new-generation mini-MPV that meets today’s motoring needs in an effective way.
At just over 3,7 metres long, the Splash is compact enough to manoeuvre with ease through narrow city streets, or to slot into tight parking spaces. Yet, its elevated seating position means it can comfortably seat five adults with plenty of legroom and luggage space, while also providing a great view of the road.
The eye-catching design is packed with interesting shapes and curves, successfully combining sporty styling with a relatively tall body. Strongly flared fenders, a bold nose and a flowing roofline are all key elements in creating the Splash’s friendly, endearing personality.
This is complemented by the use of sharp, angular elements in the side window profile, and in the high-mounted rear combination lamps that are shaped to visually express splashes of water, in keeping with the name of the car.
“Youthful” and “practical” were key themes adopted during the development of the interior, and the result is a cockpit that combines superior space utility with a bold, creative appearance.
With certain colour combinations, a vibrant two-tone colour-matched interior trim is included as fabric seat and door trim inserts, thus entrenching the vibrant character of the Splash.
Boasting a 1 590 mm high roofline, the Splash provides plenty of cabin height and a relatively high seating position. This creates a roomy, comfortable interior environment with good visibility for safer driving.
It also aids entry and exit, while the higher rear seats give the passengers a better view and a greater sense of space.
The tallish body makes access to the luggage compartment particularly easy. Load space is 178 litres, which includes a useful 36-litre under-floor compartment with a waterproof lining.
Adding to its versatility, folding the one-touch rear seats (which incorporate a 60/40 split) creates a virtually flat load floor. This expands the load volume to an impressive 573 litres. As expected of its family orientation, there are numerous practical storage areas and compartments dotted around the cabin.
Based on the European model line-up, the Splash is equipped with a high level of standard features. Even the base models include the likes of a CD tuner with MP3 player and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.
You also get remote central locking, front electric windows, air-conditioning and an integrated LCD information display.
Safety is a priority too, and the minimum specification encompasses dual front and side airbags, ABS brakes with brake assist and EBD, as well as two ISOFIX child seat fixtures on the rear seats.
The Splash is powered by a latest-genertation, 69 kW Dual-VVT 1,2-litre engine, designed to deliver superb everyday driveability matched to low fuel consumption and emissions.
It consumes an average of 5,1 litres/100 km in the combined cycle, and is credited with a CO2 rating of just 119 g/km.
