LONDON, 1 August 2025 – Four decades after Back to the Future first lit up the silver screen, one of the most distinctive vehicles in cinematic and automotive history is now live for bidding on the global auction platform, Collecting Cars. The 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 – famed for its brushed stainless steel body, gullwing doors, and time-travelling Hollywood role – presents a rare chance to own a true icon of the 1980s.
Finished in its original, unmistakable stainless steel and retaining a beautifully preserved black leather interior, this DMC-12 shows just 11,891 miles from new. A rare three-speed automatic transmission – specified on only around a third of DeLoreans built – adds further appeal for collectors seeking originality and uniqueness.
First registered in Pennsylvania in 1981 and imported into the UK in 2015, this example has been carefully maintained by its current owner, with annual servicing and recent attention from marque specialist Bespoke Cars in July 2025. With its naturally aspirated 2.8-litre V6 engine delivering power to the rear wheels, the DeLorean remains a fascinating piece of engineering – built with composite underbody panels, Lotus-engineered suspension, and the ambition to rival Europe’s best.
Few cars capture the imagination like the DeLorean. Penned by celebrated Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and spearheaded by automotive maverick John DeLorean, the DMC-12’s futuristic design and stainless steel finish were decades ahead of their time. But it was the car’s starring role in the Back to the Future trilogy that cemented its place in the pantheon of pop culture legends.

Edward Lovett, founder of Collecting Cars, commented:
“The DeLorean is one of those rare cars that has leapt from the screen into the collective imagination. For many people, the shape alone brings back a flood of memories – from the original films to seeing it take on a new life on stage. To offer one during the 40th anniversary celebrations feels very special, and we’re expecting it to resonate with collectors of all ages.”
Factory-fitted equipment includes air conditioning, electric windows and an AM/FM cassette stereo, while the black leather cabin wears its age with grace – a genuine snapshot of early-‘80s luxury and optimism. Whether viewed as a time capsule, design classic, or cultural icon, this DeLorean stands as a testament to the decade’s boldest ambitions.
Now offered for global bidding until Sunday, 3 August, this is more than just a collector car – it’s a moment frozen in time. As nostalgia for the ‘80s surges and Back to the Future celebrates its 40th anniversary, there’s never been a better time to secure your very own piece of automotive history.
