If ever a motorcar deserved the title of “Royalty,” it would undoubtedly belong to Rolls-Royce. From the first Silver Ghost in 1907, hailed as “the best car in the world,” to the opulent machines of today, Rolls-Royce has remained the gold standard of luxury motoring. In 2025, the regal presence of this iconic marque, alongside its equally prestigious counterpart Bentley, will take center stage at the 28th George Old Car Show on February 8th.
This special event, hosted at the Eden Technical College grounds in George, South Africa, promises an unparalleled celebration of British automotive excellence, with Rolls-Royce and Bentley headlining a tribute to British cars. A dedicated space on Field D will showcase a stunning array of these automotive treasures, gathered from collectors across the country. The show will also celebrate the full spectrum of British motoring heritage, with a wide variety of marques on display.
Rolls-Royce: Monarch of the Road
Rolls-Royce’s South African legacy dates back to 1910, when the first Silver Ghost was imported as the official vehicle for Lord Herbert Gladstone, the Governor-General of South Africa. Over the decades, Rolls-Royce continued to grace South African roads, initially through private imports and later via the Grosvenor Group, which became the official agents post-World War II.
Known for unmatched craftsmanship, Rolls-Royce remains synonymous with luxury and refinement. Whether it’s the majestic Phantom or the sleek Ghost, every model encapsulates the brand’s timeless pursuit of perfection.
Bentley: The Adventurous Aristocrat
While Rolls-Royce represents tradition and elegance, Bentley embodies a spirit of adventure. Founded in 1921 by W.O. Bentley, the marque gained fame for its dominance at Le Mans in the 1920s and 1930s, driven by a cadre of British playboys known as the “Bentley Boys.” Acquired by Rolls-Royce in the 1930s, Bentley retained its sporting DNA, offering enthusiasts a more dynamic alternative to the Rolls-Royce lineup.
SCOCC member Pierre Malherbe’s exquisite 1936 Bentley 4¼ Litre, with its Park Ward coachwork, exemplifies this legacy. Having recently completed a 1,200 km tour, Malherbe’s Bentley will again captivate attendees, sharing the spotlight with an array of Bentleys and Rolls-Royces on Field D.

A One-Day Extravaganza in 2025
Marking a significant shift, the 2025 George Old Car Show will condense its festivities into a single day, running from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. While previous events spanned two days, dwindling Sunday attendance prompted this change. Waldo Scribante, chairman of the Southern Cape Old Car Club (SCOCC), explained, “Many exhibitors travel long distances, leaving gaps in the Sunday lineup. To ensure a complete experience for all attendees, we’ve extended Saturday’s hours.”
Beyond Rolls-Royce and Bentley: The Diversity of British Motoring
The celebration will not be limited to the ultra-exclusive marques. British cars have enjoyed immense popularity in South Africa, from the charming Austin 7 of the 1920s to the iconic Mini and Ford Cortina of later decades. Attendees can expect to see a robust collection of classics like the Morris Minor, Jaguar E-Type, MG roadsters, and even the quirky hand-built Morgan.
For enthusiasts of speed and innovation, Lotus sports cars will add a touch of flair, including models like the Elan and the James Bond-famous Esprit. Additionally, the event will pay homage to brands like Aston Martin and Daimler, the latter having served the British Royal Family during their 1947 tour of South Africa.
More Than Just Cars
With space for up to 1,000 vehicles, the George Old Car Show will also feature vintage motorcycles, tractors, trucks, and modern supercars. The motorcycle display, in particular, promises to double in size compared to last year. Complementing the main event, a post-show tour exploring the scenic Overberg Strand region will extend the experience for exhibitors.
