Milton Keynes – The Volkswagen Golf, a name synonymous with automotive excellence, has been honored as the “Best Car of the Half Century” during the Best Cars of the Year – The New Car World Championships. This recognition, celebrated at last weekend’s British Motor Show, marks yet another accolade for a vehicle that has become an enduring icon in the automotive world. With 50 years of history, eight generations, and over 37 million units sold, the Golf remains Volkswagen’s best-selling car, a testament to its unmatched appeal and versatility.
The Golf’s journey began in 1974, when Volkswagen introduced the first-generation model as a successor to the iconic Beetle. The Golf quickly became a global phenomenon, redefining the compact car segment with its blend of practicality, performance, and style. Over the years, the Golf has evolved through eight generations, each iteration bringing significant advancements in technology, design, and driving dynamics. Today, the Golf continues to set the standard, offering petrol, diesel, pure-electric, and hybrid powertrains to cater to a diverse range of drivers.
The British Motor Show provided the perfect stage for this prestigious award, where the latest, significantly improved version of the Golf was showcased to an enthusiastic crowd. Visitors at the show were not just passive observers; they played a role in the voting process, underscoring the Golf’s broad and enduring appeal.

The judging panel for the awards was as diverse as it was prestigious, comprising world-renowned car designers, engineers, auto industry leaders, famous motorsport personalities, journalists, broadcasters, media professionals, vehicle retailers, automotive consultants, motor club chiefs, and motoring events organizers. Among the judges who cast their votes for the Golf was John Oates, a car enthusiast and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, best known as one-half of Hall and Oates, the best-selling music duo of all time. His passion for the Golf echoes the sentiments of millions of drivers worldwide.
Another notable judge, automotive journalist Mike Rutherford, who also founded the awards, expressed his admiration for the Golf. “Some manufacturers are barely able to keep their ‘most important’ models in production for five years. The fact that Volkswagen has been successfully building and selling petrol, diesel, pure-electric and hybrid versions of the Golf around the world for 50 years really does say it all,” said Rutherford. His personal connection to the Golf dates back to the early 1980s when he purchased his first brand new Mk I version. “With some justification, it was often described as all the car you’ll ever need. And that’s as true today as it ever was.”
The Golf’s versatility is one of its greatest strengths. It has expanded its appeal through highly-revered versions such as the Cabriolet, R, and the legendary GTI, each offering a unique take on the Golf’s winning formula. Whether it’s the thrill of driving a performance-oriented GTI, the open-air freedom of the Cabriolet, or the all-weather capability of the R, the Golf has something for everyone.
As the Golf celebrates its 50th anniversary, it stands as a symbol of Volkswagen’s commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction. It’s a car that has not only stood the test of time but has also defined an entire segment. The Golf is more than just a car; it’s a cultural icon, a benchmark for the industry, and, as this latest award proves, the best car of the last half-century.
